We took the train from Interlaken to Meiringen and bought the combined entrance ticket to the Aare Gorge and Reichenbach Falls, which also includes the local train service between the main station in Meiringen and the stops of the gorge. With an half hour wait for this train we chose to take a 15-20 minute walk through Meiringen to the entrance to the Falls where the funicular railway took us up the mountainside close to the main falls. After a climb to the top of the falls we took a signposted hiking path to the East entrance of the Aare Gorge. This walk, largely shaded and downhill but sometimes across uneven ground, took roughly 80 minutes to reach the gorge. The deep sided Aare Gorge was breath-taking with a man-made raised path suspended above the fast flowing river. The path through the gorge is 1km long and with plenty of photo opportunities took us about 45 minutes. Reaching the West entrance/exit we walked to the nearby railway station for the short trip back to Meiringen. Our whole trip from Meiringen lasted 3.5 hours with no break for refreshments.

Burgdorf is a model of historic town planning, with a feudal high town between the castle and the church mound, and a low town at the foot of the castle rock, where the tradesmen were based. Today the station district and historic centre with its intimate squares are popular places for shopping and strolling, for entertainment and all kinds of markets and culinary delights.

I returned here in September 2019 after having first visited as a child in 1968. It was even bigger and more impressive than I remembered. It's a small castle off the beaten path form either Interlaken or Wilderswil, but it is wonderful to climb around and explore. No gift shops or glitzy exhibits...just a honest to goodness historical site with just enough information to give you perspective, but not too much to inhibit your imagination.

Tiny castle under an overhang. Worth the walk to get a feeling of medieval history. It's tiny, so i would suggest it as a part of acwalk rather than a destination in itself. The path down is not in the older weg maps.
