Things to do in Canary Islands, Canary Islands: The Best Piers & Boardwalks

August 10, 2021 Enriqueta Cusson

The sun-drenched Canary Islands lie close to North Africa and have an exotic flavor of their own. Hundreds of volcanoes, rolling sand dunes, rich forests and rugged cliffs dapple these seven Atlantic gems. Catch a ferry to Lanzarote. Ride a camel through volcanic Timanfaya National Park. Take on Tenerife, home of Mount Teide, Spain's tallest peak. Romp Grand Canary's beaches or hike La Gomera's Garajonay National Park. More adventures await on tiny El Hierro, verdant La Palma and peaceful Fuerteventura.

Old Town Harbour

Like many places in Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen was originally a small fishing village, and the old harbour is still a delightful place to visit, boasting some excellent bars, restaurants and excursions running out of the harbour.

Walked here most mornings from our apartments, it’s a lovely area with lots of restaurants and cafes. Nice to sit in the sun soaking up the atmosphere. Did a 2 hour boat trip from the harbour, 2 of the happiest English blokes owned the boat, and made it a lovely trip, probably the best we’ve been on! Enjoyed watching all the divers doing their thing! And feeding the fish in the harbour.

Paseo Maritimo

From the Faro de Pechiguera lighthouse in the west to the Castillo de las Coloradas in the east is about 5 miles & takes you from quiet undeveloped areas, past busier bars & hotels, past Playa Flamingo & Playa Dorada, through the stylish Marina Rubicon and then upwards towards the old tower. It is extremely well maintained, clean and wide. There are benches at the best viewing points. It's great to listen to the bashing waves against the rocks and to look out towards Fuerteventura. We walked along all & then parts of the promenade many times - never tiring of the stunning seaviews. So relaxing! Popular in early morning with runners & joggers.

A pleasant walk with breaktaking views - steep steps from Peurto Del Carmen and further on if coming in other direction. Would not advise this for prams or anyone with mobility problems. Breathtaking views, did it in approx 1 hour with our 7 year old. Take water and wear sensible walking gear.

Strandpromenade Meloneras

Reviewed By top-trippers - Heswall, United Kingdom

This long sea-front promenade is the perfect place for an hour’s gentle stroll/jog/cycle. It runs for 2kms from Playa Melonares at its northern end to the 65-metre tall working lighthouse (built in 1886) and Maspalomas beach to the south. For the most part it is pretty flat. It is lined with luxury hotels, bars, restaurants, supermarkets and shops (Boulevard El Faro features high-street and designer brands; the Varadero Centre is more of a tourist resort arcade). Very clean and safe with few beggers or hawkers.

Strandpromenade San Agustin

Reviewed By 721AndrewB - Bristol, United Kingdom

The promenade follows the edge of the beach from north of san augustin to the dunes of Maspalomas, where it diverts around the golf course before continuing along the coast to Melonares. You can avoid the diversion by walking across the dunes, which in itself is a pleasant experience although harder going. We walked the entire length a couple of times during our stay, and enjoyed it very much - generally well made, although there are flights of steps or steep ramps involved at a couple of locations. (Note, there is currently a diversion in place to the north of san augustin due to a land slip. The diversion takes you away from the coast and involves a series of steps).

Looking to explore La Palma on a budget while on a Cruise stop we checked out the local bus service and hopped on TLP Service 100 to Barlovento in the North of the Island. The route took us up and down ravines along the east coast snaking up and swooping down with stunning coastal views. The single deck buses were modern and clean the roads well surfaced with overtaking lanes for the steeper stretches. €12 well spent.

Historico Muelle Pesquero Puerto de la Cruz

Reviewed By B1714D - Belgrade, Serbia

It was Tuesday, 16 July when we came in Puerto de la Cruz late afternoon after a great day in Loro park. I realized that something's going on when I saw huge crowds and looked for parking for almost an hour. Finally we found it and walked to the city center. It was a huge fiesta - the biggest annual event in Puerto Cruz: the city patron saint Virgin Carmen festival. The city looked like a big rave party, with loud music, thousands of people out - on the streets, on the beach, in the sea,...everywhere. Many food and drink stalls, rivers of alcohol,....it was mad. As the locals told me, the fiesta lasts for a whole day with its peak late afternoon when we arrived and later before dark when the Virgin is escorted from the Cathedral down to one of the boats on the beach to set sail into the ocean. Apart from this, this old small port is cute, it's in the historic center with a fortress above.
