On 8 June 1856 a total of 194 people, descendants from the Bounty, arrived on Norfolk Island from Pitcairn Island aboard the Morayshire. This consisted of 40 men, 47 women, 54 boys, and 53 girls. They arrived in cold, wet blustery conditions. Few had ever been to sea before, They were seasick, homesick, and heartsick. The journey of 6,00 km / 3,700 miles took five weeks. They arrived to a recently abandoned penal settlement set aside for the ‘worst of the worst’ it was full of ghosts and memories. It was a large and frightening testimony of man’s inhumanity to man. The 1856 untold story will follow their journey in the World Heritage Listed Kingston area.

OVERPRICED, OVERRATED, OVERCROWDED, UNDERWHELMING Was very much looking forward to this tour but the experience turned out to be one that I'm very glad I will never have to repeat. The tour left on time but when we got to the house we waited outside for 20 minutes until the door was finally opened by the tour guide who glibly announced that she didn't hear the bus pull up.We were then ushered into the entrance way where the tour began There were 19 of us so it was a bit of a squeeze. After making our way through a couple of rooms including a riveting tour of the laundry we were all seated in the fernery where, after speaking for about 10 minutes, our guide went silent. I can only imagine this was a technique she employed to elicit questions from her audience. These were slowly forthcoming but when it got down to a discussion on how the tiles were cleaned and how she watered the ferns I found myself slowly losing the will to live. The whole took two and half hours that I'll never get back.

We did this on Saturday night. We were very surprised when we got there at 5pm after being picked up and were served the main meal immediately, it felt too early. The food was delicious, local fish with chips and a huge array of salads and bread, the coconut bread was amazing. There was a gluten free option available for the fish. We brought drinks at the cash bar. The location was lovely and we were able to watch the sunset. The singer with guitar was really good. We were then entertained by some island dancers. Dessert was also served but was one dish, no choices, but lovely. We had a very pleasant evening which wound up at 730pm. The biggest problem was eating so early, not sure why we couldn’t have had the entertainment first and then have the meal served. All in all a great night out.
