Things to do in Brooklyn, New York (NY): The Best Beer Tastings & Tours

January 7, 2022 Leonarda Pillsbury

It seems like most folks have a grandmother, great-uncle or some other distant relative that used to live in Brooklyn, or perhaps a friend that lives there now. In the early 1900s, it was a mecca for immigrants arriving via Ellis Island. A hundred years later, young professionals and artists left pricey Manhattan digs for Brooklyn's cheaper and more expansive space. Neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, which had fallen into disrepair over the years, were restored and reborn as funky enclaves. Walk or bike over the historic Brooklyn Bridge (or ride the subway) to Brooklyn Heights for a stroll along the Promenade and breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Meander through Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for a taste of nature in the urban wilds. Catch a performance at the world-famous Brooklyn Academy of Music. From the delicious Italian restaurants of Bensonhurst to the Irish bars that line the avenues of Bay Ridge, from the hotdogs and rollercoasters of Coney Island to the bagels and handball courts of Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a state of mind as well as a dynamic community. Discover why, no matter where people move on to, they remain Brooklynites at heart.

So we REALLY wanted to do something different while in NYC, get away from the crowds and the hustle and bustle. So we booked this “off the beaten” path tour of queens. Why queens? Just because. It wasn’t Manhattan. It was quirky and different and we got to support a lot of local shops, actually meet real New Yorkers and learn about their craft. Ethan our guide was fantastic. So incredibly knowledgeable, entertaining and all around great guide. This was one of the high points of our tour. Next time, when time and schedules allow, we’ll be back for the Brooklyn tour too!

Filament, 220 36th St, Brooklyn, NY 11232, USA Like A Local Tours

This small group tour offers behind the scenes access not available to the public. Each tour includes visits to 3-4 makers. Industry City is a stunning design, tech, media, food and beverage hub. It is a 16 building, 6 million commercial square foot redevelopment, with 5 acres of open space and it is the largest privately funded adaptive reuse project in the country. With amazing restaurants, shops, artist studios, co-working spaces and more, locals and visitors alike can explore for hours on end. Originally built in 1906 as a intermodal shipping facility to support manufacturing and distribution of products, it served as an important industrial site, but over the years manufacturing evolved and left the city, the site fell into disrepair. In 2015, the buildings that comprise Industry City were purchased by the same developers as Chelsea Market.

What an education about our office neighborhood that we miss while on COVID lockdown. So great to dive deep into the history and architecture. I would love to do this again in real life when we can and I highly recommend the virtual tour while we can't do it live!
