Things to do in Breckenridge, Colorado (CO): The Best Biking Trails

February 18, 2022 Marissa Gamble

Once a mountain mining town decimated and nearly destroyed by river dredging, the surprisingly versatile Breckenridge has bounced back over the last century to become one of Colorado's top year round alpine getaways, with all-seasons activities galore. Restoration of the river area has led to the creation of pristine hiking trails and greenery in the summer months, but winter is the real draw. Skiers flock to the groomed slopes, chutes and bowls of Breckenridge Ski Resort by the million.

This trail had everything for us (we are not super hikers). You get to walk here from downtown quite easily (no car hassles). You begin up and underneath the ski lift and then enter a wonderful section alongside a bustling little river. You pass over a few fairly new wood bridges and eventually come up to the Sawmill Reservoir (we would pack out lunch and have a picnic along the way or at the reservoir). A true gem!

My husband and I rented ebikes from Mountain Wave yesterday and started out on this trail. It wasn't a hard bike ride (though we clocked in at 24 miles). We stopped for a drink and an appetizer in Frisco (cute town) and headed back. It is gorgeous with many great views on the ride.

My daughter and I rented bikes at Epic Bikes on Main and rode to Frisco for lunch. The scenery was soooo beautiful. The Rec Path was busy however everyone we encountered was courteous and friendly. Markings and directions were solid. Path appeared WELL maintained.

Wellington Trail

This is a great family trail. It's less than a mile to see the troll on a very flat trail through the aspens and pines. The first part does edge along a neighborhood, but it doesn't deter from the trail. Kids will like the signs that keep encouraging them with "This Way to the Troll." My husband and I loved this troll (we were on a kid-free weekend)! The statue was fun and whimsical. The artist was so creative in the way the troll appears over a mound of rocks before he comes into full view. He truly looks like he just sat down to build cairns. Do this one with the whole family! See an earlier reviewer for good directions.
