Things to do in Bali, Indonesia: The Best Lessons & Workshops

March 12, 2022 Oliva Fomby

Bali is a living postcard, an Indonesian paradise that feels like a fantasy. Soak up the sun on a stretch of fine white sand, or commune with the tropical creatures as you dive along coral ridges or the colorful wreck of a WWII war ship. On shore, the lush jungle shelters stone temples and mischievous monkeys. The “artistic capital” of Ubud is the perfect place to see a cultural dance performance, take a batik or silver-smithing workshop, or invigorate your mind and body in a yoga class.

We visited Ayana just to do the perfume workshop and it was great! There were just the two of us for 90 minutes selecting out favourite ‘notes’ to make our own fragrances. My partner had lots of fun too so not just for girls. Staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. Lovely to name your own fragrance and take a bottle home at the end. Would highly recommend. If you are just visiting allow time to explore the resort before or after- it’s truly stunning. We also grabbed a quick lunch at the Italian restaurant for tasty pizzas. Very pricy by Bali standards.

Chez Monique Silver Smith Class

Our expert silversmiths teach students how to fashion 7 grams of silver into jewelry. We teach at all levels, from beginners to experienced.

We had a wonderful afternoon making jewellery with the team at Chez Monique. This class is more about making a piece of jewellery than learning lots of different techniques - in case anyone has expectations of formal learning. We were very happy with the session and instruction needed to make our pieces. The team were very helpful, and very patient when I decided to make quite a complex pendant! We weren’t concerned about the price (that seems to be a comment on some of the more negative posts here) - we had specific ideas of what we wanted to make and even though Wayan informed us it would cost a little more prior, we were happy as we would pay similar prices (if not more) for a shop bought piece. I was really happy with my finished piece and Wayan was so lovely to chat with. Thank you!

We took 2 cooking classes and stayed at the green kitchen for about a week, and it was by far the best, most authentic experience we had in Bali! This became our home away from home. The food was amazing and all the staff are incredibly caring, friendly, and personable, we really felt like we were apart of the family! They were very helpful and always went out of their way for any of our needs. The room was perfect, very comfortable bed, nice shower and bathroom, and beautiful views of the green nature all around. We had such a great time. We called last minute for an afternoon session and were there for about three hours. Highly recommended as a way of engaging with a traditional Indonesian cultural art form and also as an activity off the beaten path and a way to relax for an afternoon in the middle of a busy, activity-filled trip. Mekar Bhuana Gamelan Music and Dance

These classes and workshops are for those people who are seriously interested in learning about the beauty and history of these unique traditional art-forms. Visitors can visit this living museum of antique instruments, take lessons, see orchestral rehearsals and catch performances of rare performing art-forms, some of them previously extinct and the results of the centers reconstruction and documentation projects. A family founded center, Mekar Bhuana's vision is to support traditional Balinese gamelan music and dance that is rarely seen or heard. Mekar Bhuana achieve this by working with the Balinese, researching, studying, documenting and reconstructing. Then we educate people, particularly the younger generation, to encourage awareness about the beauty of these endangered art-forms. Mekar Bhuana also formed an online store mekarbhuana and proceeds go to gamelan and dance projects and activities.

This was a very special opportunity. We very strongly recommend the experience of learning about this rich art form in the company of such dedicated and welcoming people. Over the course of two weeks in Balu, this was unquestionably the highlight and it opened up our understanding of the culture in ways that enhanced the rest of our stay. Lovely people who welcome you into their own home to share their deep love for one of the world's most truly wonderful cultural traditions.
