Things to do in Astoria, Oregon (OR): The Best Gift & Specialty Shops

February 10, 2022 Madelene Haan

Historic Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains, first established as a fur trading post before it expanded to become the bustling port city it is today. Its storied past is documented in numerous museums, from the Columbia River Maritime Museum with its collection of nautical relics to the Uppertown Firefighters Museum, whose collections of firefighting memorabilia is complimented by the interactive Children's Museum on the second floor.

Weird Sisters Freak Boutique

Weird Sisters Freak Boutique is a buy/ Sell/ Trade shop overflowing with quirky, strange and delightful fashions, housewares and oddities, all sold out of a shop that is also an immersive art installation that's situated in the Hidden Underground Experience. Classic Astoria charm.

Come for the artwork, eclectic attire / merchandise, esoteric conversation, and immersive theater, stay for the... the things I just said. I chose a poor formula for this review. I have attended two of their immersive theater events, and they do a wonderful job of letting the viewer guide their level of participation, to the point where they can become both audience and part of the show. For example, in December 2019, they had a sort of improvised scavenger hunt with a Narnia/Alice in Wonderland / winter/solstice theme with a remarkably elaborate set where we could pick up costume pieces to don and hunt/barter for ingredients to make potions or trade for answers to riddles from actors. I like that it encourages people to break out of their comfort zone and talk to one another. Definitely check it out!

We wandered into this adorable bookstore while visiting Astoria. The shop was friendly, organized, and charming. The lady at the counter checked in on us several times and seemed friendly. The shop had a good selection for books for adults and children. The whole place made me smile (I really like books !)
