Things to do in Arkansas, United States: The Best Gardens

May 4, 2022 Viva Honore

Living up to its billing as “The Natural State”, the state is a nature wonderland with three national forests, nearly 9,000 miles of pristine streams and rivers, awe-inspiring settings in the Ozark and Quachita mountains and sparkling lakes.

The menu of vacation experiences is an exciting one. For great golf, spas, horse racing and the Hot Springs National Park, Hot Springs is the place to go. Outdoor enthusiasts love the Ozark Mountains where activities like canoeing, rafting, kayaking, fishing, hiking and rock climbing are popular. The mountain village of Eureka Springs, with its streets lined with Victorian homes, is brimming with boutiques, antique shops and art galleries. Wine enthusiasts love the Arkansas Wine Country, encompassing the towns of Paris, Ozark and Altus, where German style wines are produced. From its ancient mountains to the Delta flatlands leveled by the Mississippi River, the state has a diverse topography with numerous scenic drives. Try the Pig Trail, Ozark Highlands and Sylamore scenic byways in the Ozark National Forest designated by the U.S. Forest Service. Golfers love the state because greens fees are extremely affordable for great courses. A few excellent public access courses are Sage Meadows in Jonesboro, Stonebridge Meadows in Fayetteville and the Mountain Ranch Course in Fairfield Bay.

Located in the woods by Garvan Woodland Gardens, the Anthony Chapel is an amazing structure of glass and wood. One of several scattered around the country, it's clear glass walls and soaring ceiling make it seem much larger.

This is an extensive and incredible trail system for all levels of riders. Super single track for the novice and the edgy; super paved trails for all ages; miles and miles of fun. The north end connector was closed due to road construction so we rode the south end in the morning and the north end in the afternoon. There are so many trails on the north end that we didn't begin to hit them all. Thank you Walton Family!!

P. Allen Smith's Garden Home

P. Allen Smith is a famous TV personality - gardens, architecture, homes, cooking, etc. His home is open to tours and lunch - it was excellent.

Reviewed By Roamalone

We've been fans of P Allen Smith TV shows for many years so this visit to his farm was on our bucket list. (It helps to be a fan because the price of the tour and lunch is a bit steep.) The property, with all the gardens, animals, and beautiful buildings made us wish we could live there. The attention to detail and all the thought and creativity that goes into this place are truly inspiring to anyone who is into gardening. It's very easy to imagine you are walking through an estate from the 1800s. The staff was very friendly and organized. Plenty of free cold water was available on this hot day. One suggestion would be to have the guide talk to the group before the tour and explain how much walking there will be and explain what will be seen, and suggest options where you might be able to rest and then rejoin the group. Some of the older guests had a hard time keeping up on some of the rough or hilly terrain. The house also has a lot of stairs, so beware if you are physically challenged. That being said, the lunch was delicious and so nicely presented. P Allen spoke to the group at the end. He is charming and gracious and full of down-home humor. This visit was easily the highlight of our trip to Arkansas. So glad we did it!

Clinton House Museum

We love welcoming guests from all over the world to the first home of Bill and Hillary Clinton and where they were married. The Museum is situated in the beautiful Ozark Mountains in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This home has a special place in local, national, and international history. Bill Clinton took Hillary Rodham's hand in marriage 17 years before he would be elected President. The home's series of owners also have deep roots in local Arkansas history. The museum houses memorabilia of Clinton's early political career, including his campaigns for US House of Representatives and Arkansas Attorney General. Temporary and timely exhibits cover the history of Secretary Clinton's life in public service and her time in Arkansas. The collections include a faithful replica of Hillary's wedding dress and a timeline of the Clinton years in Fayetteville. Our museum store has books related to the Clinton legacy, Arkansas history, Arkansas politics, and the culture of the Ozarks. We also have mementos, gifts, and more for a keepsake of your visit. The Museum is open to the public and donations are welcome.

This modest Tudor style home in Fayetteville Arkansas was not only The Clinton's first marital home but also the site of there wedding. Their first jobs were as professors at the University of Arkansas Law School. The house is in essentially the same shape as when the Clintons lived in it - altho no furniture remains. Our guide was very knowlegable. An added attraction is a "First Ladies Garden" in the rear of the house which purports to grow an example aof each first ladies favorite flower. Nice!
