Chateau de Montsegur

Reviewed By 99qwerty99 - Arrowtown, New Zealand

The walk up to the chateau can be done in as little as 30 minutes from the car park below and is well worth the effort. However, there is little information and I would suggest that anyone going there read my book "The Heretics' Revenge" available on Kindle as an Ebook. After several visits and extensive research, it is the most comprehensive story ever written about the Cathars at Montsegur and more particularly their hidden relic. Montsegur saw 210 Cathars burnt alive as heretics as just a small, but highly significant, part of the genocide of the Cathars.

Chateau de Foix

Journey back to the days of chivalry ! From the heights of its rocky crag, Foix castle with its three towers and soaring walls offers exceptional views of the Pyrenees. Built in the year one thousand, it was originally a military fortress before being transformed into the home of the illustrious Counts of Foix such as Gaston Fébus, author of the 'Livre de la Chasse' (Book of the Hunt) among other works, and Henri IV who became King of France. It now houses the Ariège département museum: the bed of Henri IV is on display. The castle's various rooms are dedicated to the art of building in the Middle Ages, the history of the castle and of the Counts of Foix, as well as temporary exhibitions. Exhibitions • Gaston Fébus, Enlightened Prince of the Pyrenees. • The Universe of King Henri IV. • Andorra. Voyage to the Heart of the Pyrenees. • Into médiéval builder's secret.

It is another of many impressive castles in France. We loved it! There is a nice museum inside, archery lessons, great views from the towers, absolutely everything I need to enjoy a castle visit :) What is more, the ticket here is very cheap and all the staff members were very helpful and friendly.
