Things to do in Arica, Arica and Parinacota Region: The Best Bus Tours

January 23, 2022 Kandra Bartel

Arica (/əˈriːkə/ ə-REE-kə; Spanish: [aˈɾika]) is a commune and a port city with a population of 196,590 in the Arica Province of northern Chile's Arica y Parinacota Region. It is Chile's northernmost city, being located only 18 km (11 mi) south of the border with Peru. The city is the capital of both the Arica Province and the Arica and Parinacota Region. Arica has a mild, temperate climate with some of the lowest annual rainfall rates anywhere in the world, consequently there are rarely any clouds over Arica. Arica is located at the bend of South America's western coast known as the Arica Bend or Arica Elbow. At the location of the city are two lush valleys that dissect the Atacama Desert converge: Azapa and Lluta. These valleys provide fruit for export.

Did this trip in February. To sum it up it consists of 11 hours in a minivan to visit three churches in Chiloe, none of them is interesting unless you are an academic interested in the technical details of wooden church building in the mid 19th century. However good the guides are (and our guide was excellent) this piece of Chile is not worth visiting. The drive to Castro in Chiloe island comprises a 70km motorway run to a ferry and then more than two hours driving along a scruffy, semi industrialised road with no redeeming features to Castro. On arrival the only logical question is "why bother". There are so many beautiful places in Chile I would suggest that people give this excursion a swerve and prevent the total waste of a day of their lives.

This agency is to be avoided ! We booked a tour including the Humberstone visit with this agency. While the guide was much involved and very passionate, the bus was very old and obviously not maintained. It broke down on the verge of the desert 75 km away from Iquique. We were told a replacement bus was supposed to pick us up but it never arrived (it was never sent actually). After 4 hours waiting in the middle of nowhere,we (15 tourists including kids) had no choice but to take a regular bus back to Iquique (at night!)
