Things to do in Anchorage, Alaska (AK): The Best Other Outdoor Activities

September 11, 2021 Diedre Savory

Set amid the coastal Chugach Mountains, Anchorage defies popular visions of polar ice caps and frozen tundra. It’s also warmer than you think (averaging 65 degrees in summer), making conditions ideal for sight-seeing or taking on uniquely Alaskan opportunities like arctic biking or touring the fjords of Prince William Sound. In the winter, you can ski, dogsled or do both simultaneously by "skijoring," which is cross-country skiing while being towed by a dog. Hey, it's no crazier a winter sport than the biathlon.

Mt Baldy

Fun hike, a bit of a scramble toward the end. Lots of people including trail marathoners—we got lapped about 3 times by a women who didn’t even appear to have broken a sweat! Of note, lots of dogs (nice) but lot and lots of dog poo (not so nice). Just watch your step and if you have a dog PICk up the poop and bring it back down with you (saw lots of poop bags people left...yuck)

My brother and cousin rented three BMW R1250GS bikes for a self-guided tour through Alaska. The bikes were a joy to ride: beautifully crafted, smooth, and powerful. The roads were fun and the mountains, rivers, glaciers, wildlife were stunning and memorable. Felt well-supported by the staff at MotoQuest.

Bore Tide in Turnagain Arm

The Turnagain Arm is definitely an amazing sight of mother nature. We drove the Highway 1 three times in total (Whittier-Anchorage-Homer-Anchorage) during three different times of day (and essentially during three different stages of the tide) and it looked different every single time. During Low Tide we even saw a Grizzly way out close to the water, which was very impressive. I would recommend to take your time and do a couple of stops at the pullovers (like for example the Beluga Point). It is definitely worth it!

Eklutna Lake is gorgeous. We stayed at Eagle River campground which is SO peaceful, then drove up to Eklutna to kayak the next day. The water is like glass in the morning with the mountains reflecting off the water like a mirror. The wind picks up around 11am but the kayaks maneuver so well through the water, that I had no issue getting back against the wind.
