Things to do in Alghero, Sardinia: The Best Caverns & Caves

April 23, 2022 Roseanne Arnett

A rare year-round resort on the Island of Winds, Alghero makes an atmospheric destination. Occupying armies have all left their marks on the old, walled city; Italian kingdoms, Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Byzantines, Arabs and Catalans have all come and gone. Offering an irresistible combination of history, architecture, culture, stylish shopping, fine food and wine, and water sports, Alghero's cobblestone streets can be explored on foot or by bus. Don't miss spectacular sea cave, Neptune's Grotto.

Absolutely, to be visited ! 500mt of vertical clif from the top, down to the deep blue see. Go from the top near the phare, going down the narrow walking way till the entrance of the Grotta of Nettuno. Great trekking.

Frecce delle Grotte di Antonio Piccinnu

Tour this marine cave that is carved in a spectacular sheer cliff, with long winding passages that delve far into the rock passing many fantastical stalagmites and stalactites.

The previous reviews nearly put me off visiting but decided to go by boat at the last minute. Went at 3pm, boat far from full, no queues and our group was about 30 people. We had plenty of time to look around, take photos and listen to the guide. She first spoke in IItalian then in English. When it was the English version people started chatting making it difficult to hear but the guide stopped and asked them to keep quiet - good. I thought it was great, on a par and in cases better than caves I have visited around the world. Unfortunate so much damage had to be done to make the caves accessible to tourists. Boat trip was great so do recommend.

Neptune's Grotto

My family spent a long weekend here at North West Sardinia during a hot and sunny July 2018. This was the first tourist place we visited. It was quite a long drive from the villa we were staying in at Sennori. Also it was difficult to find parking once we arrived at the entrance of the steps to walk down the cliff face to the mouth of the cave. But the walk down to the cave entrance (at sea level) was most rewarding as we got a wonderful scenic views of the sea cliff. If you are attempting to use this route make sure you come with comfortable walking shoes and bottled water. The walk from the top of the steps down to the entrance of the cave took nearly one to one and a half hour hour as we stopped a lot to rest and to admire the views. When we got close to the entrance of the cave, we had to queue for about 30 minutes to buy tickets to go inside the cave. The long wait was worthwhile because we were able to admire the best formation of limestones - stalactites and stalagmites that I have seen in a long time. It was most breathtaking(see photos)! We spent about another 45-60 minutes inside the cave. There were staff inside who made sure that no one got left behind. After the visit to the cave we had the long walk back up to the top go the cliff. We only realised when we got to the entrance of the cave that one could have joined a boat trip tour to the Grotta di Nettuno - picking up the boat from the town centre port of Alghero.
