I came in from Las Vegas to visit family in Montgomery. Being a fan, i enjoyed the visit to pay respect to an American country music icon. It touched my heart that this plot is for Audrey also. A family plot. This made it more special. I saw Audrey with Hank Jr in the late 60s. This was an experience I enjoyed and will never forget. Well worth the visit.

I’m one of those people that likes to visit cemeteries as I feel it can give you an interesting historical perspective of the local area. At this location there is also a national cemetery with a good number of Confederate soldiers. As you walk about you’ll notice a good number of unique headstones, many dating back from the mid to late 1800’s. There is evidence the smallpox or perhaps consumption epidemic which took place in the 1880’s. Definitely worth a visit.

Oak Hill Cemetery

Founded in 1871, Oak Hill Cemetery is Birmingham's pioneer cemetery, and the resting place for virtually all of the city's pioneer citizens. Its 23.6 acres nestle in the North Birmingham hillside adjacent to the downtown city center, offering not only a quiet and reflective greenspace that is convenient to downtown and the Uptown and Civic Center properties, but it offers great views of downtown.

making an effort to keep their old cemetery clean for others to enjoy the rich history of Birmingham. It was built in 1871 so there are a lot of pioneers buried here; I wish others would respect the dead like I do. I saw that someone wrote their name on a gravestone with a marker. I know how much gravestones cost as I am looking to buy one for my grandmother! the cemetery is 10 acres big and built on a slope but as I have been walking a lot on this vacation I did not want to hike to the top! Plenty of history to learn near the street level. As with other old cemeteries. the old gravestones are architectural wonders! I talked to the groundskeepers that were eating lunch who told me that people can still be buried here. Also that the office used to be a chapel! I had suspected that but was not sure. I praised them for making an effort to keep this cemetery presentable! There is a tour offered here, but you have to call the number to make arrangements. I had to leave as it was going to start raining!
