Overpriced hostel: dirty, not comfortable nor functional

Reviewed By LindaMendez

A way over-priced hostel without the strange people. It's definitely not a hotel let alone a lodge. Below I go in depth on our main issues. In sum for $1200/3 nights at Casa Crystal we expected a clean, comfortable, and functional house. Instead we got a dirty, not functional house, especially kitchen (you won't be able to cook!), with low pressure showers, and an OK beach. Dirty: The houses prioritize the art, not their functionality or comfort. While beds are comfortable, nothing really works. Examples: all appliances are super old, so old that despite that I imagine they do clean them, they don't look clean and you feel gross putting your bread in the toaster, making coffee, or even looking at the mirror in the bathroom. Yes, two mirrors in bathroom and you can't even see your reflection. Kitchen: Everything in kitchen is old, cheap, second-hand or it doesn't work. First and foremost, we couldn't even use the stove. Every time we wanted to use it we had to call the poor maintenance guy to come help us. Cooking took hours. Entire house had literally ONE cooking knife. First afternoon, we wanted to make guacamole (easy stuff) and we couldn't even cut the tomatoes; again had to ask them to sharpen the only knife we had. To makes things worse, kitchen is understocked. We literally had four glasses, a couple plates, there no bowls so even a fruit salad or one morning we tried to make pancakes and had to use a pot as there are no mixing bowls. Also there was one pot and two pans for a house is supposed to host up to 7 people. None of us are the chef's type, but if you want to do simple stuff like a guacamole, pancakes, or even do a salad, you will have a hard time. Showers. Both showers, first floor and second floor had low pressure water; especially upstairs this was a problem. Warm water works. Location: While you can walk to the beach, the area in front of the property has a very narrow beach space and there are lots of rocks there. If you want to go to a nice beach you have to walk like 15 mins to Playa Chiquita and that's very nice. So it's not like you can wake up and just get a dip in the water. Customer Service. The help people are really nice. This is the one saving grace. Whenever we needed to use the stove, the service guy came promptly and helped us. However, manager was resolute in not addressing our overall issues with the stay. So beware.

What a beautiful place

Reviewed By swisstraveller002

I stayed at Namuwoki Lodge for 6 nights and absolutely loved it. The bungalow I was staying in (nr. 12) has the most amazing and very private veranda. Wood, very very large, with curtains on 3 sides and a lovely bench. Sitting there in the evening, reading a book and enjoying the warm but not too hot weather and the tranquility (when the very noisy neighbours in the place next to Namuwoki were not there), that was really perfect and for me the definition of amazing. The room itself was also very nice and comfortable. On one window, the "lock" was brocken, and I think it should be fixed to add for security. This would only take a minute, and I cant really understand why it hasnt been fixed. This and the carpet around the pool are the only reasons why I am not giving 5 stars. There is a small pool, which is very nice. But as already mentionned, surrounded by a carpet, which is something I really hate. The restaurant where I had breakfast is small and nice. Staff is very friendly and there are several choices for breakfast. Its tasty, but not very special and gets a bit boring after a few days. Staff at reception was also very friendly. The lodge is about 6km away from Puerto Viejo and about 400m from a beach (to wade in, but not to swim in). There is a supermarket on the road next to the lodge, and you can get a TukTuk for 3000 Colones to go to Puerto Viejo.

Basic but nice vibe

Reviewed By Avigilator

The rooms are basic but relatively clean. The terraced cabins each have an enclosed terrace with hammock, but with little privacy due to their location next to each other. The accommodation is set in a small, enclosed garden area and offers a chilled out experience. The main town is only a few minutest walk away. Staff are friendly and can help with all your needs.

Muito bom

Reviewed By Dfabiano s

Great place but it can improve!

Reviewed By Karla O

I stayed 3 nights at this property. The rooms are small but clean, unfortunately the room did not have AC and the humidity was bad. Breakfast was delicious ! They will make your bed everyday, another great thing is the beach and the restaurant that are really close to the property. The cat on property is the sweetest, if you ever go please be nice to her she is adorable and friendly. Things that they can improve is the " concierge" or the person at the entrance of the property did not know the area or any tours nada! the kitchen smell like gas all the time, so we never use the area , rather eat at the restaurant near by and the AC , they should have AC in all rooms.

The perfect place to stay in Puerto Viejo!

Reviewed By Clara V

Our stay here was awesome, the location is great, it is very clean (there is a lady who cleans the appartment every day), and very quiet since there are only two cabins. In relation with the other places to stay I would say it is the best regards to how cheap it is, including kitchen where you can cook yourself. The terrace and the hammock outside are really comfortable to stay too. And also the mosquito net is very useful. Not to talk about how nice the hosts are, they helped us a lot in everything they could. I would definitely come back here if I go to Puerto Viejo again!

A terrible hotel in need of total restoration

Reviewed By Ba8ydriver

My wife and I paid $92.00 a night a total $368.00 for four nights. We booked on booking.com and on the web the hotel looked fine but in realty it was terrible. Our standard room was dark and dingy constructed of timber like a garden shed. The shower and bathroom facilities were poor. The swimming pool water was fresh and clean byut there were no sunbeds or pool towels. The pool bar was derelict and full of old dirty broken sunbeds. The surrounding pool area was old and worn out too. The hotel is far from the sea and the town and apparently it is dangerous to walk back from town at night in the dark. The only good thing was the owner refunded our money in full as I told him I was terribly disappointed as we were expecting a first class hotel for the price we had paid. The hotel had no other guests staying there and looked as if few have stayed there recently. This is borne out by Trip Advisor as the last review was early in 2016. Be warned this hotel Is very poor and in need of total refurbishment. Stay here at your peril.

I’ve travelled the world for a long time and i’ve seen a lot of nice places but that one… it’s definitely a must go, i mean it’s natural, friendly, SAFE, the service is just coming straight from heaven, i truly loved it, you have privacy, it’s super accessible, you’re one minute away from the beach and the centre, it’s definitely a big 10/10 for Tine and her husband. I really hope i’ll be able to go back sometime soon. We have been there for a week and then we went to a « luxury hotel » i’ll keep the name quiet but I’ve regretted a bit not to’ve stayed at the geckoes lodges. It’s definitely hard to do better i think… And if you’re a foodie… wait till you see her breakfast.
