Atta Rainforest Lodge

Location Location Location !

Reviewed By 5pauliner

Situated on the southern end of the Iwokrama Forest , Atta lodge is easily accessible from Lethem or from any of the other Eco-Lodges in the region. If you are a birder / botanist / nature lover/photographer you will love this place no matter what the accommodation is like. Fortunately Atta Lodge has plenty of amenities so there is no reason to rough it. The friendly conscientious staff and knowledgeable guides really made Atta Lodge a standout for us. I loved that we had 3 nights there so we had plenty of time to explore the area without feeling rushed. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. Loved the big fan next to the bed! We had very few biting insects despite some pretty intense rain one night. The food was plentiful and good with very friendly service. There are washing lines to hang things out and I'm pretty sure they do guest laundry on request. You can purchase frosty cold bottles of beer at the front desk . I do wish they had more hummingbird feeders set up. I think there might have been one but I don't think it was ever filled. It was something that I'm sure they would do if requested. We were just so busy and then would forget to ask. It also would have been nice to have a few more benches set up on the grounds . There was an angled bench which was a nifty idea to help alleviate birder's neck ! Even before the heavy rain and a large birding group arrived, there was septic smell. The septic field needs maintenance and/or an upgrade as there is obviously drainage issues. When the heavy rain fell the bathroom sink was not draining. If there were half stars I would give room a 3.5 . I would not hesitate to stay here again or recommend to others

Trip to Iwokrama River Lodge

Trip was arranged by Michael Patterson. It was scheduled and well coordinated. Should be an item in everyone's bucket list. Flora and fauna was indeed much to talk about. A naturally beautiful, peaceful yet fascinating. Fishing, hiking, seeing the various hardwood trees, tall, majestic and breathtaking. Visiting the villages of indigenous people, seeing the makingof cassava bread, and friendly villagers. Fishing for piranhas was enjoyable. Also saw cayman, toucans, parrots, macaws, howler monkeys. The cabin was good, lots of food and staff provided excellent services. Boat captain and drivers were polite and helpful. Thanks Michael for making our stay comfortable, educational and informative. Rewa Eco Lodge

A fantastic experience !

Reviewed By 5pauliner

Just returned from a wonderful first trip to Guyana and first travel destination since Covid. Two nights at Rewa Eco Lodge was our first stop in the interior of a 2 week birding trip to Guyana booked through Wilderness Explorers. Our Rewa guides Vivian and Carslon were waiting for us as we touched down on a grass landing strip, for the boat ride to the lodge. Following strict mask protocols and hand cleaner for all, we set off with cold drinks offered and plenty of birds to slow for on the lovely cruise . Vivian is an excellent birder with an incredible ear and Carlson also was no birding slouch ! Our cabin was delightful. Clean and airy with bed netting and hammocks on the deck. Bathroom was spacious . The only thing missing was a fan , but energy needs have to be managed at this remote location. The food was really good and fresh . We had requested a Vegetarian menu with some fish and this was provided. There is also a cash bar. Vivian our guide, dined with us at each meal which was really nice for us as we got to learn about Rewa , and some of their ongoing projects. There is a real commitment to providing a quality experience here for tourists and also respecting the land, the river and the wildlife on which they all depend . We climbed up to the lookout on Mt. Awarmie for expansive views , great birds incl. King Vultures circling overhead and Spider Monkeys keeping us company on the climb up. When we return to Guyana, we will definitely return to Rewa Eco Lodge . Despite this being known as a fishing lodge, we were not there for the fishing . There are many other activities with fantastic opportunities to see monkeys , birds, caiman, otters and amphibians not to mention the fabulous flora ! all in the company of professional and attentive guides. Can't wait to return to do some more exploring in this very special and unique place. Thankyou Rewa !

The villa is beautiful, this was my third trip to the island and it was for Christmas with my family for a staycation. We haven't spent Christmas together in 8 years and our choice to be at Hurakabra was not regretted. The food, service and kind consideration of the staff to me and my family was greatly appreciated. I highly recommend Gem and Kit's place for a vacation to relax.

nice but owner is rather creepy

fairly nice rooms. The mosquito netting is made from some material that does not allow air to flow so rather hot. nice hammocks on patio. Floor fan was mounted on ceiling, which did not really help unless one stood directly under it, difficult with the beds positioned the way they were. Food was very good, staff was helpful. Owner was very creepy, however, He kept saying ' it is your room you can do what you want' but he's a total control freak. We didn't want people coming in our room because of covid and said so but they came in at least 6 times. They decided they needed to spray under the bed because of mosquitoes under the beds? (I certainly don't want to breathe poison while i'm sleeping!!! AND if you tuck the netting under the mattress it is irrelevant. The owner actually sat in on our evening bird checklists and said 'yes' every time we saw a bird and then contested some of the things like names, etc. Rather odd. Kept trying to get us to use different things like 'lime in soup' and bitters and would become quite insistent and bullying. He also sat with us at the table as if it were a bed and breakfast. the group was actually joking about being able to escape the place (aka jonestown) and, in fact, when our driver showed up an hour late we were sure that it was a plot. Also he insisted on giving us a rather weird tour that involved 15 minutes pointing out the 3 things in the gift shop and gravesites and the one fish he had left in the pond. very strange place. not sure what else is in the area, however. wifi was free but only available in the dining room. owner restricted hours because he didn't want the users to interfere with the group leader's activities (group leader could have cared less) - another example of control freakiness. Electricity only available from 6 pm - 11 pm so fans didn't work either and room was very hot. why not electicity in the morning? would be nice to be able to get dressed and pack with some light! (He did provide LED lights, however, which was nice)

nice location, very nice staff

rooms were pretty rough. there are 4 'casitas' that had beds, windows that sometimes would stay open but.... The other rooms are in a divided up place that apparently were tiny and had no fans. The fans they gave us apparently made it so the entire town lost power during the night so we woke to no electricity. Wifi $2.50/30 minutes in the admin building, which was only open until about 5 pm or so. laundry expensive, apparently. So, not the most comfortable place to stay but location was nice and hosts were great. food very good. lots of bugs and frogs in the rooms (open windows, above walls, straw roof).

Honeymoon trip

Reviewed By RosannaRS

It's been over a year since I went to Sloth Island (April '19) and I'm finally writing this review - coming back after so long because it was just that good of an experience. In 2019, my husband and I went to Guyana so that I could show him my home country. One of the things I wanted to do was take him down the Essequibo and, him being a nature nerd, I thought Sloth Island would be great. Because we were tourists, we had no idea how to get anywhere. Raphael and Dagron Tours helped us by completly arranging our travel from East Coast Demerara to Bartica and then to Sloth Island. They were even very accommodating when our trip was delayed due to a hole in the boat to Bartica! The long(ish) trip from Georgetown was well worth it when we got there. It was possibly the most relaxing trip I've ever had. Claude and the rest took very good care of us with delicious food and sloth-spotting and, if you go, ask him for a few of his jaguar and stingray stories! We even took a few turns in the boat to see some sloths and toucans. Although I grew up in Guyana myself, I'd never seen it's natural beauty so up close. Thanks to everyone who made our trip so amazing. We live in Australia but you've convinced my husband to go back whenever we can!

We had a wonderful 2 days, Barbara and Roxanne looked after us exceptionally well. It is a place to come and relax, enjoy nature...the river, creek, birds and the rainforest make this a magical place. The rooms are comfortable and there are so many places to sit or lie and relax. I also enjoyed a swim in the creek and we had a boat ride out to the ocean. The local food was great, well prepared by the lovely Roxanne.

I stayed for two nights at the ranch, which is nestled below a beautiful range of hills (saddle mountain) and by a meandering creek. Both inspire exploration! Joan and Tom, the hosts, were extremely friendly, had great stories and served up some delicious local meals and a spicy curry. If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-track ranching experience in this part of Guyana then I would highly recommend a few nights staying here. If you are lucky, you may also see the Tamnuwa (giant anteater)!

The Castle Hotel

The Castle??? Definitely NOT!

Reviewed By kcorren

I was required to stay here for a seven day quarantine before going to work offshore. I did not have a good experience here. The only acceptable things were the AC was cold, the WiFi was ok, and there was hot water. Of course the AC and WiFi only works when the power is on….. I will say the food I was served at the hotel was not too bad. I enjoyed most everything I was served. Also, I did not have any problems with the staff. Other than that it was not good. Now on the negative side of things. The rooms are pretty small and outdated. The bathroom toilet seat hinges were rusted almost completely off. The toilet had problems flushing. There was an outdated 32in TV mounted almost ceiling hight and no cable TV (luckily I had a fire stick). The walls/doors/windows are VERY thin and you can hear EVERYTHING inside and out! That includes the night club on the street. The music was so loud at night that people I talked to on the phone asked me “turn your music down, I can’t hear you”. Yes all doors and windows were closed. There were people walking up and down the street talking and yelling every night. There were also cars with extremely loud music driving by and often times stopping in front of the hotel with music playing for extended periods of time. There were also cars with loud exhaust that were racing down the street. At least that what it sounded like. The “lobby” doors were always open and there were mosquitoes everywhere inside. I found multiple bugs and lizards in my room. I actually had a lizard fall on my face while I was asleep. The beds were old, hard, and uncomfortable. The sheets and comforter (thin blanket) were cheap. Guyana is my 34th county I’ve traveled to. This “hotel” is the second worst place I’ve ever stayed. Second only to a leaking shipping container on a drilling rig in the middle of the Niger Delta in Nigeria. When you’re going to the “Castle Hotel” you don’t expect to stay in the dungeon… I do not and would not ever recommend this hotel to anyone.
