Feriendorf

Little House in the Big Woods

Reviewed By miharashi

Feriendorf is not a hotel in the usual. It is a resort that rents furnished cottages that operate like hotels. Three bedrooms that can sleep 5 and a rollaway bed for an additional guest. The beds are on the hard side. Also furnished with a complete kitchen and a living room with a sofa, 2 easy chairs, and a coffee table. Some cottages have upright pianos. There are working fireplaces if you want a cozy fire in the evening. All have have a bicycle for your use. There is a patio with table and chairs, and you can barbecue out there. There is no maid service, so if you want your sheets and towel changed you have to go to the main building to get them. All amenities are at the Front, too. Cottages are situated in a nice conifer forest. Lots of birds and squirrels around. Bring some sunflower seeds for them. They have a garden where you can pick fresh vegetables in season. There are also 2 large chicken coops, and you are welcome to gather your own fresh eggs. The cottages are all-electric. They are a bit worn around the edges, but they still are a nice place to spend a few relaxing days. It is the calm, quiet atmosphere here that earns it 4 stars. There are a couple of restaurants on the property, but you can do your own cooking or bring in take-out if you like.

stay with breakfast

Reviewed By MrJackFrost

recommendable point is free pass for bathing any hot spa in Nukabira Gensenkyo. also good access to Taushubetsu bridge about 5-10min by car. accommodation is very homely by local family management, clean, meal is Japanese traditional and local foodstuff. bathroom is common use. Nukabetsu lake near here is so beautiful especially misty time in morning.

Ezorisukun no Yado Canterbury

Small forest cottage with cramped, shared facilities

Reviewed By EisBaer

Note:  This hotel may also be found on some web sites as Canterbury Inn or The Squirrel's Guesthouse Canterbury. This guesthouse is made up of two separate buildings, a main house and a small side annex.  The main house contains the dining area, bathrooms/showers/toilet as well as some dormitory style rooms and a small private single room.  The side annex contains a gift shop (of sorts) and an attic room, which serves as a private double room.  This review is of the hotel in general, as well as the attic double room that I stayed in.  The hotel location is very nice, set in a thick forest of pine trees, you might think you are in the Black Forest in Germany instead of Japan.  The signage for the hotel is a bit small to see from the road and GPS is helpful to have to even find it from the highway.  The main buildng is a small cottage, that is fairly cramped and crowded.  The upstairs dorm rooms and downstairs single room are not very big and all bathroom/shower/toilet facilities are shared between these main building rooms and the side annex attic room.  This means that if you are in the side annex attic room, you need to go outside, cross the path and enter the main building.  Not very convenient if the weather is bad.  The included meals are served in the main building on the ground floor.  The dining area is also small, but has lots of nice windows to see out into the forest and watch the birds or squirrels at the feeder.  The meals are basic, but more of a blend of Japanese and Western, so good if you are getting tired of pure Japanese style meals.  There is very little in the area, other than two other small hotels, so your outside dining options are limited if you want something else.  The attic rooms itself is not too bad.  It is large enough for two people, but you do have to position the sleeping mats to be careful not to hit your head on the low ceiling when you sit up.  The mats and bedding were actually very good.  There is a small kerosene heater in the room that smelled a bit when I turned it on, so I left the window open at night to try and get a little fresh air in at the same time.  The stairs up to this attic space are a bit narrow and steep, not very easy to navigate with a piece of luggage in one hand and while wearing only socks.  Be careful, the wood can be a little slick with socks. Overall, I only stayed one night here and would consider it just an average experience.  It is not too bad, with a fairly decent location to the main highway.  The forest location is charming, but the shared toilet/bathroom/shower situation was a bit annoying.  The food, for me, was a bit average. Pros:  charming forest setting Cons:  shared bath facilities, cramped main building
