The best available hotels & places to stay near The Hebrides

August 6, 2022 Enriqueta Cusson

This beautiful archipelago, where Scottish Gaelic is still spoken, is divided into the Inner and Outer Hebrides and stretches the length of Scotland's west coast. The most visited and largest of the Western Isles is the brooding Isle of Skye, a short ferry ride or bridge away from the mainland. Islay, home to prolific whisky production, is another gem. Highlights of the less visited Outer Isles include stark Lewis and the town of Stornoway, rugged Harris, with sandy beaches and tranquil Barra.

One of the best locations we have ever been to in the world!

Reviewed By amandawr2016

We had a wonderful stay in the Cuillin Hills Hotel. The staff were all absolutely delightful, the rooms were of a very high standard and overlooked the sea. However, it was so much more special than just the sea, as you could see very easily and closely the gorgeous view of the land mass opposite, which was beautiful. The sea also had the odd yacht and fishing boat in it, which was lovely and the hotel lawn had multiple chairs and tables to have a drink or cocktail overlooking the view. It was also 5 minutes walk from the main town. Lastly, the hotel suggested that we might like to book a reservation for supper the first night, in case we arrived late and the other restaurants in town were fully booked, so we did. In fact, we ate at the hotel restaurant every night, as the food was absolutely delicious, easily worthy of a Michelin star we felt, which we feel sure they will be awarded very soon!

Wonderful remote hotel

Reviewed By CreamTeaKate

We stayed at the Flodigarry Hotel for a night in May. It is in a stunning location, not far from the Quiraing Hills and overlooking the sea. The grounds as you arrive are beautiful and the entrance , restaurant and bar rooms have been restored really nicely. It is cosy but grand with a lot of attention to detail. We had a room overlooking the sea which was really comfortable and spacious with a nice bathroom. The dinner was fantastic and a real treat. We had drinks and a canape in the bar before having a delicious 3 course dinner in the restaurant. The food was really high end with great local produce. The staff were all very attentive and the owners were available and involved in all the proceedings making it a very personal service. It is not cheap but we really felt it was worth the price for a special experience on Skye. The breakfast was also very good and set us up so well for the day we didn't need lunch. They are also very dog friendly and our border terrier Arthur was allowed to sleep under our table in one of the restaurant rooms but they were mindful of people that don't want dogs in the restaurant so had two rooms which was absolutely fair enough. We have highly recommended this hotel to any friends who are visiting Skye as a must.

Super Birthday Dinner

Reviewed By DMT22

My wife and I had a birthday dinner in the Islay Hotel. We had not eaten here for quite a while and were very pleasantly surprised at the extensive and exciting menu. We both ha a starter and main, but couldn't try the puddings as we were so full. Our meal was perfectly cooked, beautifully presented and expertly served. We couldn't fault the experience. This was easily the best meal we have ever had in the Islay, not that there was anything wrong in the past, but this was exceptional. Well done all and thank you.

This was how it was all evening, we never had to wait long for anything. The food was really good too and very well presented. The staff couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful even though they all must have done their 10,000 steps just that evening. We would definitely recommend The Crown, Stornoway for a great meal & great staff.

Kinloch Lodge

Kinloch Lodge is a special place. It is somewhere to escape the noise and speed of modern life. Somewhere to relax and recharge, where you can take things at your own pace. The Isle of Skye is frequently, justly described as one of the most spectacular places on earth. Kinloch is in a particularly beautiful part of the island: down a long drive, at the foot of a mountain and at the head of Loch na Dal. Here you will find some of Scotland’s best food, roaring fires, whisky on tap and giant beds. It can be hard to leave. Kinloch Lodge was the Macdonald family home where Godfrey and Claire raised four children (and countless beloved dogs). They opened the doors of their home as a hotel with the intention of welcoming guests as they would do through their own front door. This spirit of heartfelt family hospitality was pioneering at the time and has not changed. Today Kinloch is run by their daughter Isabella Macdonald

Wonderful tasting menu

Reviewed By georgier450

Set in a beautifully maintained old country house on the edge of a lock, we enjoyed a brilliant tasting menu - set price of £75. We arrived early and had a few drinks in the cosy bar before being taken into the impressive dining room overlooking the loch, decorated with enormous historic paintings of noteable Scottish people. Service and food was great - the most formal dining experience we had on the island, but not as stuffy as equivalent London restaurants. A few families were eating at the same time and we noticed that children's options were offered too. Coffee and sweet treats the perfect way to end a delicious meal. Definitely recommend for a spot of luxury during your Skye trip!
