The best available hotels & places to stay near Taveuni Island

August 12, 2022 Marissa Gamble

Sure, it’s a bit rainy here. But a lush tropical paradise needs water—otherwise you wouldn’t see such brilliant flowers everywhere. The black-sand beaches provide contrast to the riot of color everywhere else. Nature-lovers can see many of Fiji’s indigenous species, especially in Bouma National Heritage Park (where you should also stop at Bouma Falls).

Rustic and laid back

Reviewed By PeterJT46

This is a rustic no frills resort. We picked as its advertising said it had a bar, restaurant, free WiFi, air-conditioning and a swimming pool. It has all these, but the bar only sold beer, the free WiFi was intermittent and patchy, especially when the generator is off each day between 10AM & 4 PM. Staff are fabulous, especially Julie, who runs the bar and kitchen. She prepares and serves fresh food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is reasonably priced as is paid for in cash. Air-conditioning is not available between 10:00 and 16:00 as the generator is off. This can make an afternoon nap uncomfortable. A great back packers retreat but at FJ$200 a night

The diving here is spectacular for both the hard and soft corals, the healthiest we have ever seen. We cannot recommend Taveuni Dive Resort more highly. The ownership, management, staff, and dive crew were wonderful, the manicured setting of the resort is stunning, and the food was over the top. The warmth and kindness of everyone associated with this resort comes through in everything they do for their dive customers. We will return!

Best place in Taveuni to stay

Aroha is the place to stay in Taveuni. The quiet and comfort of the bure and the cleanliness were like finding an oasis amongst the seething humanity of the ferry and the township. A place where one can relax and do some work or enjoy the stillness and the company of your loved one. The food is delicious and the staff very professional yet friendly. The owners are wonderfully accommodating and the ambiance of the place is the gold. I will be back and back and back again many times and urge you to do the same. You won't regret it.

Disappointment.

Reviewed By troistravelmoi

No swimming available, no pool, no hottub, and nobeach access! This is really not a true resort. Is a home base with very few extra villas for there family and guests. It is extremely secluded need time to plan the boat trip access. Hardly any staff around for assistance. All Meals are just bland at extra costs. Any boat trips are high cost. Plenty of dogs around sleeping at the front door of your cottage seemed extremely thirsty. Dogs follow you everywhere which can become totally annoying and not relaxing. But no bartender or waiter service provided which made our dining experience not comfortable. There is no data internet service or wifi.

Special slice of paradise

Reviewed By Mareli V

This is truly a special place - far away from mass tourism and glitzy 5-star resorts - a very remote, more private experience. If lazing by the pool with a cocktail in hand is your idea of a perfect Fijian holiday then this is probably not the place for you. However, if you value unpretentious, warm and genuine hospitality, and get excited about off-the-beaten path travel and discovering hidden gems in unspoilt paradise then you will love Viani Bay Resort! We stayed for 4 nights and found our accommodation to be reasonably comfortable. It’s basic/ nothing fancy but has everything you need. We enjoyed the outdoor bathroom and didn’t mind the “cold” shower - we recognise and like the fact that this is an eco conscious resort so the little inconvenience of not having steaming hot water is a small price to pay for the luxury that is enjoying this remote slice of paradise! The food was the best we’ve had in our 2 weeks in Fiji - Nessi and her team cooked us delicious, authentic Fijian meals. We loved the explanations of the different ingredients that went into the dishes. It’s better than any “Western” food we’ve had anywhere else in Fiji. Note that it’s a set menu so you can’t order off a menu. However they were very accommodating of our dietary restrictions/ preferences and we were able to try foods that perhaps we wouldn’t otherwise have ordered ourselves - and everything was delicious!! As for drinks, the resort operates a ‘bring your own plus corkage’ system which we preferred as it worked out much cheaper than buying drinks from a resort bar. Our driver who picked us up from the airport (organised by Viani Bay Resort) stopped by the local bottle shop so we could buy some beers. We also bought some wine at the duty free shop on the airport as wine selection on Taveuni is extremely limited. We were mainly there for the exceptional diving (which I will write about more in a separate review for Dive Academy Fiji) but also enjoyed snorkelling and SUP’ing in the bay, a marine conservation talk and trip out to Jone’s coral nursery, as well as a boat ride to Rabi Island with a chance to swim with manta rays. Meeting some of the kids from the nearby school and seeing them arrive/ depart by boat was also a highlight and gave us a small glimpse into local village life. All in all we had a wonderful time and enjoyed everything about our stay at Viani Bay Resort - special thanks to Marina, Jone and Vanessa for their hospitality, to Nessi and the kitchen team for the delicious food and to Jonah and all the boatmen for the outstanding diving! We will definitely be back (hopefully soon)!

Paradise stay

My stay at dolphin bay resort was just perfect. The rainbow reef is just breathtaking for diving. So colourful! The bungalow was wonderful equipped with a beautiful view to the sea and jungle. You can even hike at the place to wonderful viewpoints. Everything is green and seems to be really unspoiled. The housereef is also quite good for snorkelling at the rights side. The food and service was just excellent! So healthy and special meals. And on top a wonderful massage. The staff is really nice and helpful. I enjoyed every second on that green island for nature lovers. Thanks for a perfect time :) Regine from Germany
