Epicurean Hotel, Autograph Collection

Not quite the 4 star experience.

Reviewed By Tracy212A

Full disclosure. I walked into this hotel with the understanding that I would not enjoy my experience at all but I was prepared to suck it up for my gf's wedding. Long story short, we thought we were being pro active in booking a room online and thinking we could just move the booking to the bridal room listing when they finalized it but unfortunately due to 2 unforced errors from their staff, we came away feeling duped and yet this could have been handled so differently. So coming into this hotel was not pleasant for me until I met Kay. She is just awesome people. There were so many things I needed as an out of towner wedding guest but Kay made every single request seem like it was the most natural request ever. I loved the fact that she made an extra effort to meet our demands. After 1 day., all my anxiety about the hotel and the booking issues receded. The room with a terrace is directly next to a Freeway which is as loud as all hell so there goes that. Why would you charge top rate for that room? That was very triggering for me considering the wedding room list booking debacle and the emails back and forth. Anyhow, to continue with my review. The restaurant Elevage is very much hit or miss. How do you get over easy eggs wrong? meaning hard yolks!! Basically this hotel felt like nothing special and I think that is what I am trying to convey. A place is made special by its staff. Kay was exceptional and I wish I had seen her when we checked out but she was due in later ? so we missed her. It is people like Kay and I am sure others who are working there, who make this place thrive.

I checked into the hotel Sunday, May 1st for a friend's birthday. Three hours later when I was sitting by the pool area the head of security came over to me and said that the hotel management asked me to leave the hotel. They gave me reason for this. I had to go to my room clean everything out. I went downstairs under escort to the front desk and the Front Desk manager said the say thing. My reservation was cancelled and I had to leave. Nothing was said to.me as why I had to leave or anything given to me writing. Today I went to the hotel to see a friend and help her with the cost of the room and the same security person came over to me and said I was trespassed from the hotel and I couldn't stay here. I promptly said I am not staying here but a friend was. I do not recommend this place to anyone.

Hidden gem...

We stayed here over an extended Memorial Day weekend. I knew it was close to the airport but was surprised at how close. It was very easy to find, plenty of covered, free parking. We checked in and headed to room 346 - 1 bdrm suite with a view of the bay. I was a little apprehensive before going in because based on previous reviews, it seemed 50/50 on the condition of the rooms. Ours looked exactly like the pictures thank God and it was nice and clean. The view was ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! There were complaints about the bathroom size but I thought it was adequate. The full kitchen was a bonus but we just used the fridge and microwave to keep food/drinks cold and heat things up. And that ice maker…. Man, that thing kicked out some ice! I had to end up turning it off because it kept making it so fast. I ended up buying a small bottle of dish soap because I don’t trust the dishwasher. My hunch was right because when I pulled out the bowls to wash them, one had some caked on food residue around the entire bowl. They layout of the room was very good. The hallway was a bit narrow but nothing to complain about. The bed was comfortable but small. The room itself was a bit tight but again no bid deal. I would suggest they add a ceiling fan or ceiling light to the room because the lamp doesn’t provide much light when trying to look for items in the closet. There are two bar stools at the counter and a table with two chairs in the living room. The couch is trash. They need to replace that immediately. It is very noisy and definitely on its last legs. We didn’t even pull it out to sleep on. The balcony is where you get your money’s worth. There is a small table and two patio chairs. Perfect for coffee in the morning and wine in the evening. Our view was over the sand area. The sunsets were spectacular. The grounds are well kept. The exercise area outside was different. I’ve never seen that before. There is security at the entrance. The pool is very small but it never felt crowded. The water felt sooooo good, although it could have been just a tad cooler! I always get annoyed at any hotel/resort where guests save lounges and disappear for hours. I wish there was a way for hotels to find a solution to this. The food at the pool cafe is excellent. The deck is large and nice for sunbathing or lounging but there are also some tables/chairs for eating. There is a small pier that many uses for photo ops or for fishing. We had a few catches but threw them back. It was very relaxing but would have been nice if there was a place to sit while on the pier. The sand area was very nice. The sand wasn’t hot and it was very soft. Great for the kids to play in it. There is a little rocking bench/swing, adirondack chairs, fire pit, tiki torches, grills, table/chairs, volleyball net in the same area. It was very nice and never crowded. I would suggest patio lightning be left on throughout the night. The fire pit and lights go out at 10pm so people still hang out there but you can’t see much. Most others go back to their room and hang out on the balcony. It would be nice to have an area where the night owls could still chill and not disturb others in their rooms. You definitely need a car to get around because your only food options are the onsite cafe and the restaurant (Rusty Pelican I think) that is across the street and to the right. Whiskey Joes is up the street but everything else you have to jump on the Causeway to get to it but things were very close. All in all, we had a very relaxing vacation which is just what we wanted. The staff we encountered were great(Damien and Cynthia at the front desk and Shelly at the cafe. Also the very nice groundskeeper who would keep the pool area clean). The other guests were very nice as well. We met a lot of people that we got to hang out with at the pool. I would definitely stay here again. They just need some basic upgrades and it would take this place to the next level. I would want a two bedroom next time and hope for it to be just as nice as the room and stay we just had.

A Near-miss Saved by a Dedicated Staff!

Reviewed By StV6

The actions of the staff turned what could have been a disaster into a wonderful stay. I made the arrangements through the Hilton reservation system (which is obviously in some offshore call center) and I was very clear of our one, single, need. As my wife is handicapped we must have a roll-in shower rather than a tub. I was very clear and had a long conversation with the agent and he told me I "most assuredly had a room with a roll-in shower reserved". When I arrived the clerk informed me that there was no indication that we needed a special shower and none were available. This was our single requirement as without it my wife cannot bathe and so the room was useless to us. We were faced with nowhere to stay at the very last minute. Fortunately, the manager was able to step in and upgrade us to a suite with the appropriate shower. We were given a beautiful room in what looks to be a nearly new hotel adjacent to the airport. The room was quiet and comfortable and the food we ordered from room service was delicious (and not outrageously expensive). The availability of food onsite was important as there are not a lot of dining options in that part of Tampa. We had a terrific stay and my wife was able to shower off the famous Florida humidity. I would recommend this property but beware of the Hilton reservation service. This is not the first time it has let me down.

After what felt like a hundred years and multiple cancelled flights, this spot did the trick. It’s pretty great to be at the airport already and just roll yourself to the gate. The have dinner and breakfast room service. I did breakfast and it was quick. There’s also a small pool/patio area that was quiet when I was there. A bit dated, but the people were nice and the location can’t be beat.
