The best available hotels & places to stay near Sosua

August 15, 2022 Misti Hsu

Sosua is everything you want a beach town to be. Clear waters teem with coral, perfect for snorkeling and diving. Above sea level you’ll find multicolored sands lined with beach shacks. This small enclave of the Dominican Republic was once a haven for Jewish refugees. Historic sites and synagogues offer great perspective on Sosua’s postwar identity. On a lighter note, a community of ex-pats helps fuel a boisterous, international nightlife scene.

From start to finish the staff at The Ocean Club made me feel at home, safe and happy. The “rooms” are not only rooms they are entire living spaces that are clean, have every amenity from a full kitchen to a washer/dryer. The grounds are kept impeccable. Every part of this property is so well thought out. There are several options for seating/laying by every pool and by the ocean. The food at the restaurant is delicious. There are several menu options that would appeal to various people. Again, the staff made every meal memorable. They are attentive and kind. Paddle boards, snorkeling, kayaking and cliff jumping are available at the resort at at no extra charge. The spa is beautiful and relaxing as well. I would highly recommend this hotel to everyone. It is peaceful and beautiful.

I stayed 2 weeks at the SELECT (Adults Only) side of Casa Marina Resort in Sosua. It was my first time visiting DR and this resort. The resort lived up to the expectations. I had a Gardenview room in the select area (building 1) on the top floor. The room was a bit "hot" even with the AC running, but not a huge deal to me. The lower floors were allegedly cooler. The weather was absolutely amazing with nearly NO rain at all and almost 30C every day in late January. Amazing. The ocean was calm most days but when I first arrived the Red Flags were up and the swell was HUGE. As the ocean calmed, the resort was a bit slow to take down the Red and then Yellow Flags. You can jump in from the rocks on the right side!! The food in the one Adults Only restaurant (Hermans) was good. Make reservations in the mornings. I didn't care for the other restaurants. Buffet breakfast was fine but need BACON everyday. The servers around the Select Pool were great. The Wrap de Pollo was a fantastic lunch. Presidente on tap, and a few Models and Coors cans in the room fridge. Reaort should amend its policy of "Men Need Sleeves" to enter the buffet. Times have changed and if women can enter in a tank top I should be able to also enter in a tank top - especially for breakfast!! Like cmon. As this was in the height of Omicron, the resort did do well in its policies and departure testing. Hopefully this won't be needed on next visit!! :) The best part of the resort is its proximity to Sosua the town on the doorstep. Had great times off-resort enjoying the flavors and culture of area bars and restaurants. I will definitely be back (to the SELECT side) of this resort!

I spent 1 night here, May 25 to 26, 2022. My overall opinion is that Arien has done a great job to earn my respect and positive review. In the past, I have been one of the most severe reviewers of the place but now I think they are in my very strong top 3 hotels of Sosua in terms of cleanliness, location, safety and customer service. One suggestion is that they need to have a better and more clear communication with customers to avoid confusions such as the one that made me unable to stay there for my entire time on the island.

Stayed at Villa 24 with my wife and 3 small kids for 4 nights. Pros: - The villa was very nice. Great really. Large, modern, great private pool. Couldn't have asked for anything more. - The price, both of the villa, and food and beverage on site extremely reasonable/ almost underpriced. - Location - close to the airport. Super close to Sosua Beach, Playa Alicia, and very close to Cabarete. We went to Kite Beach for a day. 10 min taxi ride. Awesome day. General note: - From what I can tell there was an old hotel called Sosua Ocean Village which no longer exists. The old pool from that hotel, which has some waterslides, and a little boat shaped bar are still open, but a little run down. Decent shape, but not great. There are pictures on the website of a larger waterpark, and restaurant Laguna. For us at least access to these areas was not included. The pool area we could access, on the eastern edge of Ocean Village Deluxe, also gives you access to the beach. The beach here is strikingly beautiful. But it is not really ideal for spending time in the water. At least while we were there red flags were up the whole time. Very rough surf. This is not a long beach, more a little beachy area surrounded by rocky cliffs. On the western edge of Ocean Village Deluxe, where we checked in, they seem to be building the center of the new Ocean Village Deluxe resort, and you are basically in an active construction site. The pool and restaurant over there are fully under construction. Like bulldozers, the whole nine yards. There is one restaurant that is open, a short walk away, with a big pool next to it, and 3 whirlpools on one side. This restaurant is mostly outdoors, gorgeous, and the food and drink were all very good. But it is the only restaurant. Cons - Hospitality - The staff here were all very nice and friendly, but I kept getting the sense that management and the rules they are told to follow were the impediments to us really getting a sense of hospitality. Some examples - upon check in to the villa, one of the first things we were told was to take pictures of the plates and glasses so we could dispute any charge related to them being missing or broken upon checkout. Weird. You are given a bracelet that you can use to charge things to your room and access some locked gates, etc. We were given a stern warning losing one would result in a $25 charge. At dinner one night we asked for the check without stating we wanting to charge to our room. We were told it was too late once the paper check was presented to switch to a room charge and had to use a credit card. Our stay included breakfast. We were told to bring a paper voucher to the restaurant each morning. One morning we forgot and were not allowed to place our order until I went back to the villa and got the voucher. None of these were huge issues, but altogether just destroyed any sense of us being welcomed to the resort as guests. - The restaurant was listed as opening at 8 and we were able to be sat then, but it seems like the chef does not get in until closer to 8:30. First two mornings it took almost an hour to get our food. Tough with 3 kids. - One morning we were picked up for an excursion at the resort at 8:50. At 8 I walked to the restaurant and asked to order some quick food to go, i.e. a croissant, a bagel. Was told kitchen was closed. I asked if they could drop food at our villa once ready, as long as it was by 8:45 when we had to leave. The food was not ready in time. I got a bunch of WhatsApp messages throughout the day making sure I would sign the invoice for my free breakfast that wasn't delivered in time for us to eat. Not a big deal, but annoying, and I got the sense the person sending the messages was nervous they'd somehow get in trouble if I didnt sign the check. - On departure day, we informed the front desk we were getting picked up by a taxi at 8:15 to make our flight. They asked if they could come by to inspect the villa at 8:15. We explained that would not work since we had to leave. They said they would come at 8. They did not. In the taxi to the airport (around 8:20) I stopped at reception to let them know we were leaving. They tried to convince me to go back to the villa to do the inspection. I told them I had no time and got in the cab and left. Not a great parting experience. - Villa has a dishwasher and washer/dryer but no detergent. There is no store on site, nowhere to buy detergent (or things like suncreen) which would have been a nice convenience. Overall - Really great value. Great location. Despite my complaints listed above, which did irk me, I would come back here assuming the same nightly cost. My kids had a blast. This part of DR is awesome, and we had a great time. Some little tweaks could make Ocean Village Deluxe nearly perfect. My fear is once construction is done it will be out of our budget. But for now...

We enjoyed an amazing dinner in the beautifully decorated restaurant. The chef really knows his way around all courses - salad dressing was freshly made and very flavourful, pasta cooked to perfection with choices of sauce and seafood, salmon and mahi mahi also presented very well. Desserts were delicious! Service by Wilton was top-notch! We would cheerfully enjoy the experience again. Take your time, relax, and enjoy the food and atmosphere.

Great place

The Ahnvee is a beautiful hotel. I liked the fact that it is right on Pedro Ciclante (which appears to be the major thoroughfare in Sosuá) but not in the center of town. It is located right across the street from a great restaurant with a friendly staff and a five minute walk from a seemingly new supermarket. The manager Luis was very friendly and attentive and so were his front desk agents Caroline & another lady whose name I can’t recall right now. The penthouse apartment that I stayed in was scrupulously clean and spacious and the WiFi was excellent. My neighbors were more than friendly and willing to bend over backwards for me as most of them seemed to come from, “Santo Domingo papí...” One front desk agent even hooked me up with a driver who took me to the banco to get pesos and a clinic to get a COVID test so that I could come back to the US. It is definitely designed for a single guy such as myself and it is the only place where I would like to stay in Sosuá.

A dream realized by Italian fashion designer, Piergiorgio, this white clapboard inn has a wrap-around verandah adorned with ornamental gingerbread, characteristic of Sosua's glory days in the Victorian era. The front entrance replicates a gazebo and faces a dramatic marble staircase that ascends to the third-floor, Italianate penthouses with expansive sundecks.

Location, Character and Parking

This is a really unique property. Accepted some reviews focus on maintenance issues. I find this a harsh assessment. Accepted there are rough edges however I see every sign they are investing in maintenance and overall I had no issues. The hotel is walkable from town yet on the quite clifftop (aside from crashing waves). Staff were great, free parking (Sosua has parking challenges). The two pools are spotlessly clean and maintained and the aspect of the property on the cliffs is awesome. I suspect I was given a lesser appealing room (land not sea facing), however I had only paid $29 B&B via a well known BOOKINGS website and the room was just fine, not up-to-date modern however large with good A/C and hot (warm) water. Very happy

I just came back from week stay at Hotel Don Andres, and I had a perfect experience there. It is within walking distance to great restaurants, the strip of bars and Sosua beach! Currently curfew is 9pm, and as such it is quite as a mouse after that so restful sleep is easy. The pool here is maintained perfectly, crystal clear water. The attached restaurant bar and restaurant is attended all day and night by the owners and their staff, delicious coffee and fresh food cooked to order. I was lucky enough to enjoy owner Chris' monthly European home style beef stew, I loved it. I really enjoyed hanging for a drink at the outdoor bar, where I met some great locals who stroll in and enjoy the music, drinks, food and ambiance. (HOLA Gregorio!). There are lots of options on where to stay in Sosua, but I was so lucky to find and stay at Hotel Don Andres.
