Very happy with our supper. They were hosting a very big group and still took good care of us (party of 3). We all had the hamburger and fries. Loved it. We shared a crème brûlée. Super way to end our day!

Hotel Tindastoll

Hotel Tindastoll is the oldest hotel in Iceland, dating back in 1884. The building came in parts from Norway and it was assembled as a storehouse in Hofsos between 1820 and 1829, moved later on to Grafarós in 1833 and finally shipped over the fjord and reassembled at its present location in Sauðárkrókur.

Curiously expensive local niceties

Reviewed By angantysson

This was interesting. It´s basically like being invited to dinner at a rich uncle´s house who knows how to cook. It´s a bit weird but the food was okay and the fish was super fresh and nice. The environment is amazing but the town itself is a bit of a ghost town so I don´t know what else to recommend there. The rooms themselves are extremely basic especially given the price tag which is just ridiculous when I think about it. If you yourself are of the rich uncle variety then I would definitely recommend this place, otherwise I think your money is better spent elsewhere.

Fun little place, great staff

Had a lovely stay, the rooms are small but clean, the toilets and bathrooms are simple but clean. The outdoor swimmingpool is amazing!!! The breakfast was delicious fresh and plentiful. But the best thing about the hotel is the sunny, smily and beyond helpful staff who made us feel welcome and straight at home!

Osar

Astounding scenery & spacious, clean hostel.

Reviewed By Joanie1000

I arrived late & Knutur had left the hostel open for me. It's a long stoney , dirt road , not easy to drive in at night. When I woke up I was amazed at the view that awaited me. I was all alone in the hostel ( low season) and had this vast view ( see photo ) to take in. (Unfortunately I was alone , it's an incredibly romantic place !!) I was not really prepared for how remote Osar is ( neither a village or a hamlet , just a farm ) and it's important to know that there is only a snacks shop available off season & other options are nil I believe- bring food to cook. The hostel had everything you need , great kitchen ( massive) , great hot shower. When guests came in the following days, it's a fabulous place to cook, chat & exchange travel tips. The main attraction for me on this peninsula ( Vatnsnes) was the seal colony which knutur directed me to ( through his farmland). There's also the very impressive rock formation in the sea down the road ( 10 mins walk) which I think looks like a donkey drinking , not a sea monster ( it's called Hvitserkur) & has been ravaged by the sea. On the same peninsula there's also the story of the tragedy of Illugastadir & the story of Agnes Magnusdottir, the last public execution in Iceland ( she was publicly beheaded in 1830 not far from the peninsula).(A book called Burial Rites tells the story.) There's also a volcanic plug on the peninsula called Borgarvirki which I went to, fabulous views and impressive improvisation on the part of the Vikings for using it as a fortress too. I had a wonderful conversation with knutur in his cafe one day & he let me watch him feed the sheep too. It's rugged & vast, quiet and pretty and I'd recommend this hostel / peninsula ,esp for couples/ those who want an escape. Very reasonable. Not great for those without a car. Bring supplies out of season. There are eating out options in summer season.

Bed to Sleep

Reviewed By Travelassist17

Key box code not received by mail, as mentioned in booking process. Also no response after asking for it by mail a few days in advance. Therefore phone call during checkin process which end pretty quick after getting the code. Clean room with bed and nothing else. No water cooker, toaster or something else. (As common in Island Hotel rooms) Public room shown on pictures not open to public. So yes there is a bed to sleep but nothing else. Regarding food there is only a gas station near by, no restaurants are available in this area and there is none at the „Hotel“.

Most comfortable night in Iceland

Reviewed By nimrodisease

We LOVED this guesthouse. We turned up on their doorstep without a booking and they let us in straight away - turns out we were their only guests for the night (being the middle of winter). The owners were super lovely and we chatted with them for quite a while. The whole place is very comfy and the shared bathroom is enormous. The location is quiet (like everywhere out this way), and has a really nice outlook. Plus, the breakfast was to die for! So good. For the price there's no way you can do any better.

Very good if you love bad smell and flies

Reviewed By 214vitog

I give only one star because i can’t give zero. Worst guesthouse of my trip in Iceland! When we arrived in the guesthouse, there was a disgusting fishy smell. But that’s not the worst thing: in every room there were lots of flies. We brought a spray to kill them, but that wasn’t enough. Then, the owner (that was not in town) gave us other rooms that was used and dirty. We agreed a refund at the phone, but then they said that we didn’t deserve it because we slept anyway (The alternative was sleep in the car). I absolutely do not recommend it.

Loud wind tunnel could use better soundproofing for the rooms

Reviewed By jenmito

I reserved a seaview room which ended up to be on the second floor. The room itself is quite large and the view was nice and the private ensuite bathroom was also clean and modern. As this is a guesthouse, there is a shared kitchen. There was a fridge, microwave, stove, oven, washing machine, and hair dyer. There was also some sort of compost which could have had some instructions on how to use it. What needs much improvement is the soundproofing. Every time someone opens the entrance, it is like a wind tunnel in the hallway. I also couldn't figure out why the wind noise wouldn't stop after I checked that the entrance was closed. I'm guessing it's a mixture of doors and windows be open. As the large group who overtook the kitchen for the whole night went to sleep, even the wind noise ended. I'm not sure why that party was split between the ground floor and the 2nd floor, but it would be better for the other guests if they were contained on one level so the rest of us could have a kitchen to use and some peace and quiet.
