Best restaurant we went to in Portugal - AMAZING!

Reviewed By traktorslav

This hotel has a restaurant in it and it is fantastic! You can eat outside right next to the old water mill with the sound and view of the water passing under the old stone moss covered bridge. The food, OMG the food! We had Petiscos Baccalhau (3.50€) as a starter which were the best we have had in the last 2 weeks in Portugal (and we have had a lot!). For the main we had grilled octopus and veal in mushroom sauce - both were a slightly different take on the usual traditional food and were absolutely delicious! The starter, 2 mains and dessert (together with the very nice white vinho verde, salad, soft drinks and coffee) it came to a total of 40€ for the two of us. On top of that, the service was excellent! The waiter, the owners’ son, was very nice, attentive and speaks fantastic English. He and kitchen were also very attentive to our dietary needs. All in all, location, service, food, price - all 5*!

A great getaway and retreat from the big city in beautiful Fafe

Reviewed By 512robynf

What a wonderful hotel in the heart of Fafe beside the beautiful community gardens. My friend and I had such a great stay here. Friendly service throughout our stay from all levels of the staff upon every interaction, very clean room (loved the natural, vegan-friendly soaps and the extremely comfortable bed), and a great complementary breakfast with very strong safety protocols and measures in place for a covid-friendly setting. A very good value for the quality of this accommodation and a peaceful stay overall. Looking forward to returning.

Guimaraes-Fafe Flag Hotel

Our hotel is strategically located in the very heart of Minho, well-known Portuguese northern region, famous for its delicious traditional gastronomy and green wine. The city of Guimarães, considered the birthplace of the Portuguese nationality and also the birthplace of Afonso I, the first Portuguese king, is only a-ten- minutes drive away from the hotel. Its Historic Centre, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, deserves your welcoming visit as well as The Castle and The Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. From the Guimarães-Fafe Flag hotel it is also easy to travel to Braga, a city known as “the Portuguese Rome”, due to its Christian religiosity and historical places. In Fafe, both the Regional Car Museum and the Press Museum appeal to your visit. If you are a Nature-lover, Fafe offers you at least ten different pedestrian circuits across the council, which enable you a close and healthy contact with the Nature. We are looking forward to welcoming you and your family!

The only confort is the name..

Look no further in Fafe, this is the only option! It is amazing why such a wealthy city has only this depressing establishment to offer to its visitors. It starts with location: far from the centre in a " nowhere" area. The construction is on top of a curve over a busy roundabout, no place for cars to stop in front of the entrance to unload. A minuscule parking lot with clients walking access by some steep stone steps on the lower side of the hotel provides inadequate parking. If it is full, which is usual, there is litterally no other parking place around for several hundred meters to park your car! The hotel inside is plain and basic. No lift so if you get a room on the first floor you carry your luggage up the steps. Reception personel is kind and helpful. The rooms are ok, small and not much but beds are clean and confortable. Bathroom is adequate. Breakfast is good with plenty of choices, good bread but bad coffee. Ask for a machine expresso. Very popular with excursions buses so rather busy.

A beautiful and peaceful place

We stayed at House Mint for a week in the middle of July. This beautiful holiday home is located outside a small village near Fafe. The farm buildings and house have been converted into 5 holiday homes of various sizes. House Mint is a double height apartment with the living room, kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor and a mezzanine bedroom. The apartment has been constructed from high quality materials and is beautifully equipped including towelling robes, toiletries and pool towels. The swimming pool is just across the grass and comes with very comfortable waterproof bean bags, great for total relaxation. The porch outside the apartment is in the shade from midday, ideal for those who want a break from the sun. We were surprised to find that the apartment had maid service. Daniela, who welcomed us to the property, came in daily to make the bed and clean the apartment. She was so friendly and we loved the days when she left slices of cake and glasses of port for us, such a nice touch. The whole complex is beautifully maintained with a fountain and pond in the courtyard creating a lovely ambiance when you walk through from the shaded parking area. There are views over the surrounding countryside and the local town of Fafe is well supplied with good supermarkets for easy shopping. We had a great day out including a river trip in Porto , about an hour away by car and we also enjoyed visiting Guimarães with its stunning castle. This was one of the best holiday apartments we have ever rented and we loved it.

To avoid during the winter

Reviewed By 166francescae

The location is good, surrounded from vineyards, peaceful, good to reach by car some of the touristic attractions. Room (Quarto de Vinha). Breakfast also is abundant and varied. BUT unfortunately this property is not equipped for winter season: when we checked the room was freezing, clearly was not used since longtime and they did not think to warm it up in advance. It took the whole afternoon & evening to make it comfortable. Yet the worse is the bathroom as there’s no heather at all: not even a portable one. Unimaginable to take a shower being so badly cold. And when we raised the point, they didn’t really care about it. Unless they set properly for the winters season, it is NOT recommended. A pity.

Breakfast is included and the use of the kitchen is permitted if the house is rented in its entirety or subject to availability. AMAZING! lovely little hide away with unbelievable hospitality

Reviewed By MarijeW20

What words to use to describe this gem... because that is what it is; a gem. It is what you want it to be, a house, two appartments or 5 hotelrooms. We booked two rooms with breakfast. The owners showed us around in the house were a cake was awaiting us in the kitchen. The rooms are lovely decorated in a nice subtle colour-theme. The cake was homemade and delicious. The breakfast was superb! On could not ask for more. Every morning a different egg-dish, fresly squized orange juice, sweet pastries... and loads of fresh fruits. The garden is big with a nice pool and different places to sit in sun or shade. We used the patio for a BBQ and even there we had a fridge and coffeemachine to our use. The wood for the BBQ was cut and ready. It was wonderful!! Elsa and Joaquim are nice, caring and loving hosts and spoil their gasts! And the house is situated on 45 minutes from Porto so a great spot if you wat to see something more of Portugal like Guimaraes, Braga, Ponte de Lima and other lovely villages.
