Overall stay was Good

We were very happy with the hotel and our stay was a good experience. We were suprised to be told on arrival that we should have booked a time for breakfast as 11am was the only time available we feel 11am is a bit too late.

A Highlight of Our Trip to Ireland

Reviewed By Aslanschild2

Our overnight stay in this castle/country house was one of the very best experiences of our two-week trip to Ireland. Paul and Patrycja Mernagh are gracious and elegant, as is their newly refurbished castle/country house B&B. Both have worked previously in the hotel industry for many years, and it shows. They know how to do hospitality and fine dining. They are not hovering or chatty, but are friendly and make themselves available when needed. The breakfast was gourmet (baked eggs!) and sumptuous, served meticulously. Fit for the king and queen of the Castle, which is exactly how we felt. Our room was spacious and gorgeous, among the loveliest we had on our trip. One of the most unusual experiences we had during our entire stay in Ireland was the permission Paul gave us to enter the 15th-Century castle ruin attached to the 17th-Century country house, and fully explore it on our own. It is well-lit and partially restored (very early but evident efforts). With due caution, we felt perfectly safe climbing the railed stairs all the way to the turrets and gazing out across the idyllic farmlands, something that would never be allowed in the U.S. thanks to lawyers and a highly litigious citizenry. We could hardly believe our good fortune to be able to do this, and we thanked Paul afterward for his—what, courage? Good will towards his guests? Desire to share such a precious heritage? All of the above, I believe. He sadly observed that he may not be able to offer this privilege much longer, even in Ireland. So, come while you can. This place is a rare find; for us it was the treat of a lifetime.

Excellent customer service

Reviewed By travellingmomde

We enjoyed our stay in this hotel very much. The staff here is outstanding, always friendly and very efficient. The room was big and clean, the bed the most comfortable I have slept in lately. The food we ate there, including the breakfast, was tasty, served with a smile. The distance to the town center takes about 10 minutes walking and is enjoyable in good weather. We would definitely return if we are back in this area. Now a few points to consider, the carpet in the room could do with a thorough vacuuming and in this time and age, if we hang up our towels they do not need to be changed.

Improvements needed

Reviewed By fergalk2014

First of all, this was a nice stay and we really enjoyed the weekend but there were areas that certainly need improvement in the hotel. The initial check-in was a bit of wait as there was only one person on the desk. The room was lovely. No issues. Breakfast was overall a little chaotic. The breakfast area is placed in one corner where the cold breakfast area is directly across from the hot area divided by a rope. In busy periods this meant a bit of a free for all with guests ignoring the one way system. But this wasn't a big issue. Staff I found a little brusque and I found on one occasion a more senior staff member berating a junior staff member which I found off-putting. This should quite simply never happen. Generally staff in the main areas didnt look the happiest and this does not give the best impression though the man on reception was nice and helpful. The staff around the rooms also looked content enough. The breakfast itself needs attention. The bacon was like cardboard and the white pudding was far to well done and was rock hard. Sausages were nice. Eggs a bit cold. Crossants and breads were lovely. All in all a nice stay but so much more could be done in terms of small touches and more professionalism. I have stayed here before as its a great location but Id overall have to consider whether to make a return.

Lovely staff....some food issues, but would definitely stay again.

First time staying here. We found the hotel to be well run, with lovely staff and very comfortable rooms. The bar food menu looked great, but we did have to send food back to be reheated, ànd on both nights of our stay, not all of the dishes were available, particularly the second night, when four or five main courses were unavailable. Nonetheless, we would definitely return again to Brandon House, and would recommend it to all travellers.

Bar food

Just returned from a one night stay in Dunbrody House, and wanted to share what a fabulous experience it was. Afternoon drinks beside a roaring fire (summer in Ireland ???) were lovely and relaxing ; nice room with a garden view and a huge bathroom ; and a fabulous dinner in the Harvest room restaurant, with 1st class service and food that was seriously high standard. Beautiful country Manor House, loads of period features and a really relaxed atmosphere. Sadly was just a short stay- but made to feel really valued by all the excellent staff. Can’t wait to go back.

Bedroom in need of refurbishment

Reviewed By BernadetteM869

Very pleasant staff throughout the hotel. Stayed for breakfast which was good. We were unable to book a standard room as none were available so had to avail of a superior room at the cost of 185 Euro. On entering the room, it smelt of stale urine, even though the windows were wide open. The room falls below standard for a basic room, let alone a superior one. Tiles cemented together in the bathroom. Stain on the bathmat. Mould around the bath. Peeling paint on furniture doors and bathroom, swinging sink tap etc. In a superior room you would usually find extras, such as, separate shampoo and conditioner, in addition to the wall accessories provided. We were given a face cloth, towels and two shower caps.
