NileIt nails the camping experience

Reviewed By turkce_bilmiyorum

I've dozens of years experience camping in the bush, but this was my wife's first time to ever sleep in a tent and she very much enjoyed it. Sometimes you hear people joke that their form of camping is the local luxury hotel. Well, if they ever tried NileIt Resort they might find it is very much like that sort of experience. We only decided that morning to go to Jinja, but needed to do some other things before we could leave; so, it was the middle of the afternoon before I called NileIt. No problem. They had room and when we arrived just before sunset, they had our tent all set up and the bed made. They also made getting there easy sending us a photo on WhatsApp of the sign we needed to be looking for to make the turn and our GPS led us directly there. The last few hundred meters are down a dirt road that can get muddy and might require a 4X4 in certain conditions. It had rained and we found the road slippery, but encountered no real troubles getting there. I appreciated that the facility is fenced in on three sides (access to the Nile means that one side is open) and there is round the clock security. The staff was very friendly. They waited till we had settled in and then offered to prepare us dinner, but there was no rush. The menu was quite varied with local foods and Thai foods dominating the menu. My wife choose pork chops and I sweet & sour pork with red curry. Both were prepared as ordered and were certainly good, but not superb. Meaning that I have no objection to the food and would certainly eat there again if staying there, but I wouldn't make a special trip for the food. We felt similarly with regard to breakfast which was a respectable eggs to order, 1 sausage, 1 strip of bacon, and a variety of fruit along with tea, coffee, and juice. Breakfast was included in the price of 220,000 shillings for a tent with a double mattress in the sleeping room and two lawn chairs in what qualified as a sitting room/entry. It did not rain while we were there, but based on all my years of camping I was satisifed that it was built well enough and properly set up so that we would have stayed dry in the rain. While we were cautioned to be prepared for it possibly getting cold at night, I actually found it quite warm in the tent -- so much so that I didn't need the very nice comforter our bed was made with. Sleeping is a tent that the staff sets up and takes down for each set of guests, so there is no ensuite bath. I found the shower house and toilets exceptionally clean. Do take a flashlight with you in case you should need to use it in the middle of the night as the electricity is turned off part way through the night. I actually appreciated that because that made it dark enough to enjoy the stars. That you are spending the night in a tent that is not a permament structure also means there is no charging of your phone overnight. Fortunately there is a charging station at the lodge where meals are served. The grounds are well maintained. My wife loved all the different varieties of plants and flowers. Mosquitos were not a problem, but do take proper precautions as they are around. The 'pool,' if we can call it that, is less than a meter deep. You can sit in it and enjoy cooling off, but not swim. It's too small. It's an above ground pool that one might purchase for your backyard, but we liked how they designed the brick to surround it and may copy that idea in our own compaund. As for activities, the resort doesn't really have anything onsite, we asked about a couple of things and they offered us brochures from other local companies that provide what we were looking for. It was then up to us to make arrangements for ourselves. Not a problem when you know the area as we do, but if I was from abroad I would be needing a bit more help -- and maybe they can provide it, I don't know as we didn't ask. All-in-all, a nice place for just sitting back and relaxing. I think next time we might take the kids, but if we do we'll get them their own tent.

Favorite place in Bwindi&Uganda

Reviewed By Kristin_Netherlands

Karungi camp was our absolute favorite place in Uganda! It’s beautifully situated, the rooms are cosy&clean, the staff is really friendly ánd you get the opportunity to interact with the local community while staying there. There’s a wonderful garden where basically all the food that is served, is grown. There’s lots of birds and a great shower. There’s beautiful hikes with panoramic views of the volcanos and various community experiences that can easily be organized during your stay. We’d highly recommend staying there for at least 2 or 3 full days so you get the chance to dive into local Ugandan culture and the lush surroundings of Karungi Camp. Seeing the mountain gorillas was a breathtaking experience, but just being at Karungi Camp was one of the highlights that stood out most to us as well.

Christmas wild Holidays

Our Family Christmas Holiday was amazing with an excellent wild experience at Engiri Game Lodge & Campsite. The staff Gift, Linet, Simon, Sharon and Mike gave us a true hospitality service you would like to experience. We had great meals and the chef was quite excellent for the FB option we had. We opted for the Camping tents which were comfortable, neat and of great experience. From the restaurant we could view a heard of Elephants nearby. We had great campfire which was cut short by the rains. Having Wireless internet was quite great however only accessible at the main building and was frequently interrupted. We had sports amenities with us and as such the camping area had great space for mini sports activities like soccer and badminton. The greatest experience was our second night when a heard of elephants visited and was feeding at our camp area, the Night guards Simon and Mike frequently engaged them for close to 3 hours as they came close to our tents. We look forward to yet another camping experience at Engiri Game Lodge & Campsite.

Roots Retreat and Camping Resort

An oasis between Kampala and Entebbe

Reviewed By Dirk-Jan1

We spent 2 nights in the beautiful Roots retreat. It has a large garden with small canals and loads of birds (3 kinds of kingfisher for example) and monkeys (2 kinds). You need at least half an hour to walk to every corner of the garden. As a bonus owner Samokello, who is a famous singer, does performances in the weekends with a team of beautiful dancing ladies. The staff could be better, but I heard from the Dutch manager that they are working on that.
