Romantic Hideaway in the Jungle

Reviewed By Kathleen H

Long overdue review. My boyfriend and I spent 10 nights at Canaima Chill House at the peak of the rainy season. WE LOVED IT! So relaxing and chill. Feels like a secret paradise. We arrived in the dark of night and were in total awe of our studio loft room and the whole place. Our jaws dropped when we got there and we couldn't stop smiling and talking about how gorgeous the place is. The interior design is so sexy and jungle/beachy. Perfect decor for a Costa Ric vaca. Done just right. Very romantic atmosphere. Clean and comfortable. Great natural light from the huge window behind our bed. Our room was on the 2nd floor. We slept in the gorgeous queen-sized bed in the main room. The studio we were in also had a loft with 2 single beds, more than we needed. We loved the location. It is up a steep road which can be challenging in the rainy season if you're not a good driver. We had no problem with it, but you definitely MUST have a 4x4. We actually chose Canaima because of its more secluded location up this hill. We loved being tucked into the jungle up there off the main road. We woke up every morning to the sounds of howler monkeys at first light. They were our signal to check the surf! When we visited Santa Teresa the time before, we stayed at a place just down the hill off the main road, and we never heard a single howler monkey, nor did we see any. At Canaima, we saw families of monkeys in the trees on the property daily. Lunch time was was the best time for monkey watching. There was so much incredible nature to see right from our porch. It was magical. The porch was like a whole extra room. We didn't want to hang out in town at night because the patio was so awesome and relaxing. Nice kitchen. We cooked breakfast daily, and most nights, we ordered food and cooked and dined at the table outside. The staff was all friendly and helpful. We felt very safe. The team all wore masks and practiced covid safety. The pool area is fabulous! The photos don't lie. The staff cleaned the pool and hot tub daily. We loved hanging out here. When we first arrived at night, we were happy to find a stocked honor system fridge with bottled water, beer, and wine by the front desk. This was very thoughtful and convenient. The owner really understands hospitality. The room was equipped with a safety light for brief blackouts, which can occasionally happen when you are in remote jungle beach areas during heavy rainstorms all over Costa Rica. Local restaurants deliver to Canaima if you don't feeling picking up food. Even in the pouring rain. If you're thinking about staying at Canaima, don't second guess it. Just book it! This place is paradise. Great for couples. Great for a small group too. We had 3 guys staying in the room next to us who seemed very comfortable as well. We can't wait to go back.

Do Not stay if you are reliant on WIFI!

Great location and price. Wifi did not work, only for parts of the day. Hotel leaked when it rained, but was cleaned immediately and we were checked on. It is a great deal if you are looking for a place to stay that is close to town but quiet. If you need wifi for work, you should not stay here.

Staff with attitude

Reviewed By josi_782

Why 1 star? Three reasons: - cold staff with attitude who are not one bit interested in interacting with guests or actually providing any customer service. - room was just about to be clean when we arrived. After one night the room was even less cleaned. I don't know what the cleaning staff does, maybe they have the same attitude as the reception staff ( = "please don't make me work") - unreasonable price (220 USD) for mediocre not well looked after facilities, no breakfast (you can get one though: breakfast with a juice, coffee and a main dish would set you back between 10-15 USD - seriously?! You don't even pay that in all the hipster places in Santa Teresa) and bad service. Thus feeling of getting ripped off. - one positive: the place is lovely at night and the music from the yoga lesson gives a nice feeling when you chill out in your hammock. Hopefully this place gets friendlier, happier and more motivated staff with less attitude.

Shangri-la!

Reviewed By Knightrider2009

Our villa was absolutely stunning: from the views, the outstanding service and our own personal pool. A delicious breakfast was brought to our room each morning so we could enjoy the scenery, listen to the ocean waves and birds. The staff set us up with massages, yoga class, transportation to/from Tambor Airport, provided guidance on obtaining a COVID-19 test prior to returning to the U.S. (right in our room) and were incredibly helpful and welcoming. The products in the bathroom (body wash, shampoo, conditioner and lotion) were soooo nice! I probably would not recommend renting a vehicle to get around the area as the road up to the hotel is very steep, roads in town are pretty bumpy and the drivers in the area are on ATV's, motorcycles, trucks, etc... and there are also very few sidewalks in town, so people are on the side of the road walking too. We walked everywhere locally. Such a great place to get away. T

Rooms were big enough and fully equipped (nice outside kitchen, hot water, AC) Housekeeping service was outstanding. The owner was so helpful, and even assisted us to book our next ferry. We would go back there if passing by Santa Teresa. Worth the price !!

Cocobolo, our second home?

Reviewed By kristinypm

I'm struggling to find the right words. The most amazing stay on our vacation in Costa Rica. From the moment we stepped our foot in the Hotel it felt like our home. First we saw Coco and Oso (their dogs) chilling and sleeping in the main entrance. Then Jess and Lalo came to greet us and showed us the room. We arrived very early, so we did leave our bags in the lobby, and we explored this amazing area. We talked about surf lessons with Lalo and started the next day. What an amazing experience!! Lalo is the most patient, passionate, calm and amazing teacher with his heart in surfing, and it shows in his lessons! You can really feel his love for surfing, and it's beyond fun to learn from someone who wants you to love surfing as much as he do. And Jess, her love for people shines through her every second of the day. Thank you so much for making us feel like home! Our stay was 6 nights, (too short!!! for this amazing place) the room was so comfy, clean and practical with separate shower and toilet. We stayed in the family room, and had a balcony where we ate breakfast every day. The shared kitchen is so clean and have everything you need to make easy and good food. The whole place is a feel good place, and its impossible to have a bad day at Cocobolo. Coco was the most loving and social stay at home dog, that wanted to be with you all the time, and Oso the most beach loving (he surfs!!) and playful fellow who loves the water almost more than everything. Im already thinking of going back for a longer stay, and I just arrived home-home. I will absolutely come back in the future! 100% recommend Cocobolo Surf hotel and school! I can honestly say with my whole heart that this was my best travel experience so far thanks to Cocobolo (and I'm an flight attendant - so I travel)

Large apartment, excellent location and attentive owners?

Reviewed By siriwhaguru k

An amazing quaint hotel directly across from the main surf break in Santa Teresa. A large apartment type room, with queen bed upstairs and kitchen living room downstairs that created an excellent separation of space. Ice cold air conditioning with excellent wifi and a smart TV (Netflix, YouTube etc) . The owners live on site and are there to help with any requests you need. They arranged airport transfer for my wife and I to Liberia in the evening. The location cannot be beat, next to surf, breakfast restaurant, eat street (food cart plaza), two phenomenal local sodas and super Ronnys 2(grocery store). The pool is always nice and refreshing after playing in the sun and having an ice cold apartment with a kitchen made us feel at home. Thank you for everything and we hope to come back sooner rather than later, Pura Vida?

Worst surf rental ever

Reviewed By E644MFrichardb

I rented a surfboard with these people at their stand next to the beach walk way. Surf rental is only $13 cash per day. Very good deal. They gave me a board, I am a beginner surfer. I surfed the second day and on the first wave in the shallow water, the leash detached from the surf board. They gave me a used surf board, this could happen to any person. I 1 hour early to the rental shop to return the board, I saw the staff, they were there at 8am despite it opening at 9am. They completely ignored me and said they dont open until 9am, fine. I returned the board later and they told me it was my fault the leash detached from the surf board. And a leash would cost me $40. They refused to show me where to buy a cheaper leash. And they continued to say it was my fault, despite giving me a faulty used board to which this could happen to anybody. This is the worst surfboard rental in Santa Teresa, would recommend this place to nobody.
