Hotel Nordlys

Authentic Greenland experience close to Ilulissat

Reviewed By 558nanometres

I stayed 2 nights here in early May, while winter still had a strong grip on the east Greenland coast. It is owned and operated by generous host Ole, who will pick you up from Ilulissat fisherman's harbour (beside the Royal Greenland factory), convey you by scenic boat trip to Rode Bay and also cook meals for you if booked at reservation. The hotel is very simple, rooms are spacious and comfortable - this is all about the ultra authentic Greenland experience living in a tiny village. The best things about Hotel Nordlys are - no electronic/internet distractions, being in the great wide Greenlandic outdoors and feeling the flow of village life for a couple of days. There is a restaurant in the village during summer, and you can go dogsledding in winter. At all times of year, icebergs will go quietly drifting by the bay while you read your books in the conservatory with floor-to-ceiling windows. In darker months, you should be able to see Aurora Borealis dance above the hills from the same conservatory. I had a very peace time being away from all distractions, with plenty of space to walk and enjoy the outdoors. I would recommend for couples, friends and solo adventurers. Families - there are working dogs in the village, so be sure that you and the kids are fully on point about correct Greenland dog etiquette.

Still same friendly service

We had stayed at Hotel Avannaa 6 years ago and were keen to return when next in Ilulissat. We found that it had changed hands since last time but the new caretakers are fantastic, and so helpful. Especially when planes were being rescheduled due to the world melting down due to COVID-19 and had weather delaying flights, they would keep an eye on things and call Airlines for us. The rooms are comfy and the views from the ocean side are as fantastic as ever and the light is constantly changing. See pic. It's a bit of a walk into town so bring your spikes if travelling in winter, otherwise taxis are plentiful. We'll be staying there again next time was well. Geoff & Annette (Australia)

Skønt, nyt hotel i Nuuk

Reviewed By LoneS113

Reviewed By GlennG_13

God værdi for pengene.

Max level Danish hygge with view over icebergs

Reviewed By 558nanometres

I stayed in the "blue" house (the guesthouse has a group of 3) which was utterly amazing with a view to die for. I spent so much time glued to the dining table with a hot coffee, just looking out the windows. In late winter the sun sets behind Disko Island in perfect line with the table, with all the icebergs drifting around in the bay below. Furniture is minimally simple and maximally comfy. The place unassumingly dials up Danish hygge (inelegant translation : cosy) up to 11 plus a million-dollar view. There are three double bedrooms in the blue house, with shared basic kitchen and no frills bathroom, but the staff might sometimes need to use a small anteroom as the reception/office area so just be aware. In a matter of 3 days I managed to completely fall in love with the house and feel completely at home. This would be very highly recommended for solo travellers, couples, families and for the record I would happily move my entire office into the blue house and have all meetings in there.

In fact, We are returning to Greenland next year and the first thing I did, securing the plane tickets was to reserve here for our nights in Ilullissat. It’s a very comfortable base at a good price for most anything you plan to do in the area.

TOP STAY IN IGALIKU

The hotel has rooms inside the main building, a cozy hostel a few hundred meters down the hill and some new cabins up the hill from the hotel. The service, food, beds and facilities there are very good. This is absolutely the place to stay. We stayed both in cabins and hostel. It is clean and nice. Staff do a great job there. Recommended! The only thing that is missing is bicycle rental and kayak rental. The standard is not luxury, but this is not expected in a small place like this.

My friend wanted to go on an adventure when he bought his new plane. I told him I knew the right adventure. We went fishing for Artic Char at the Ipiutaq Guest Farm. This was an awesome experience. The guest house was simple but comfortable. The food Agathe made every day was excellent. Every day we enjoyed the view of the fjord. Fishing in the Ilua river and the fjord were great. We for sure got a good workout walking to the river every day. Agathe also arranged a boat tour through the ice bergs which was fantastic. Hotel Nordbo

The Nordbo ("The Northener") Hotel offers you an excellent starting point for your stay - whether you are in Greenland to work, or you are here to experience our beautiful capital and countryside. Just ask our other visitors. They keep coming back! The NORDBO offers you the most exquisite and cozy apartments with all the home comforts in luxury at hostel prices. Originally, the buildings were made as blocks of flats. However, in 1998 Allan Jensen and Leif Aagaard bought the property and changed the flats into separate hotel apartments. The first part of the NORDBO contained eleven hotel apartments, ready in 1998 at Vandsøvej, in the centre of Nuuk. In 2003 the NORDBO added another six hotel apartments to the place, and in autumn 2008 another six apartments finished the extension of the premises, which included an administrative office and rooms for engineering and storing. And in 2012, we have in the center of Nuuk taken over and opened Centerbo (it is now called Nordbo I Centrum) after refurbishment. And not least Nordbo Apartments are completely newly decorated. We also have a hostel in Nordbo I Centrum. We offer rooms in high hostel standard with shared kitchen, bathroom and toilet. It is a good overnight opportunity in the capital of Greenland, not least schools, institutions, associations and the price-conscious backpacker. The hostel has a total of 12 beds, divided into three rooms with two beds in, and a dormitory with six beds in. There is a shared kitchen and toilet, and in the basement there is a bathroom and toilet. We have accommodation in central Nuuk for every taste and budget. Each with their own character and decor - but all decorated for a pleasant stay here in Nuuk. We have now started building the new building that will be in Vandsøvej 13. There will be 18 new hotel apartments, new reception and a breakfast restaurant. The new building will be finished either the end of 2020 or the start of 2021. Welcome here in Nuuk!

Something different!

Reviewed By Cormac_Burke

Having just arrived here to Nuuk, Greenland on a flight from the UK (via a night stopover in Copenhagen), I’m immediately conscious of the fact that I have come to a part of the world that varies greatly in terms of culture to most of the other 59 countries I have visited over the years. People are extremely friendly but unlike most of the nearby Scandic nations, not everyone speaks English and prefer to use Danish or their native Inuit-based language. On first appearance, the ‘city’ of Nuuk seems a deserted suburb of wooden houses but on closer investigation, these houses are home to many fine shops and stores with high quality (and high price) goods. One such group of buildings is the Nordbo Hotel complex with its distinctive dark red structures and, although some current renovation work has meant that scaffolding is everywhere, it doesn’t detract from the curious layout and ‘unusualness’ of Nordbo. Not actually a hotel in the Western European traveller’s sense of the word, this facility is home to a wide range of self-catering apartments which, for anyone like me who spends several months each year living out of a suitcase in so many hotel rooms that all feel the same, this is actually a refreshing change. With downtown Nuuk just a five minute walk away, shops to get the necessary food items you need are plentiful and, as mentioned, it does make a pleasant change to be able to cook a meal instead of yet another restaurant sitting. The standard single, reasonably priced apartment comes with (strong signal) free wifi, vital for the modern traveller and its worth mentioning that although the complex is very close to city centre, you certainly wont be kept awake by any traffic, as it feels very much ‘out in the sticks’.
