Yarraman Weir and Station Park

Yarraman Station Park is the historical location of the old train station. Only the old sign remains on site as the station building was relocated to Heritage House in the CBD. Yarraman Weir Park is about 500m from Station Park. Please leave your pets at home. How to get there: Yarraman is about 120km north of Toowoomba. From Yarraman city centre take Browne Street (which turns into Millar Street) and you will find the Yarraman Station Park at the end of the road. Park your car and get ready to go back in time while you make your way along the weir trail. Facilities: Parking, picnic tables, picnic shelter, horse stables, toilet. An attractive area beside Yarraman Creek, the local Yarraman Weir Park forms part of the rail trail. It is an overnight campground (with horseyards) for use by bone fide Rail Trail users. Remnants of an old steam engine used to pump water to the Queensland Pine Mill (the first pulp mill in Australia), can still be seen. The Weir Park is also an ideal place to picnic and watch the abundant wildlife.

Phoenix Creek Motocross And Camping

Phoenix Creek is a family-specific motocross and camping park located 2 hours N/W of Brisbane QLD. It caters to all bike sizes with 5 purpose built recreational motocross circuits, together with a camping ground running alongside a creek with waterfalls, rock pools and swimming areas with rope swings, ladder etc. Amenities include clean male and female toilets, fireplaces and playground equipment. The Park is generally open weekends, public holidays and QLD school holidays but it's a good idea to check the website/facebook/instagram or call before heading up as particularly bad weather or track/property works can force closures. Given the primary focus on safety, there are very strict rules regarding ride gear, bike exhausts and a list of items banned on the property. Guests need to call before visiting.

Yarraman Heritage House

Our group arrived just before closing but the staff were friendly and very helpful and kept it open to give us time for a quick look. The WW1 display of actual artifacts and a range of real weapons was fascinating - particularly as they had German, Japanese and British machine guns, rifles and pistols on display in great condition. They have prepared the display well with personal histories of some of the locals who went to war from Yarraman over a 100 years ago. Their other area covering other history aspects of Yarraman was also interesting and the building itself being built first as a dormitory in case of invasion and then as a rural school boarding house is worth a look around. The whole museum was in such great condition they must have some excellent and enthusiastic volunteers who look after it.

Muntapa Tunnel

Visit this heritage listed and secluded tunnel near Cooyar to learn about the region’s rail history. The tunnel was hand dug in 1913 and at 287m in length, it is Queensland’s longest straight railway tunnel. Located 640m above sea level, it's the only tunnel that crossed between the inland and coastal sides of the Great Dividing Range, and the only one that crossed the Range summit. While you’re there take a peek at the colony of bent winged bats that lives inside. A great place for a picnic, there are tables and BBQs near the entrance. How to get there: The tunnel is located about 40km north of Oakey or 16Km south-west of Cooyar. The access road (Narko Nutgrove Rd) is unsealed.

Have wanted to visit this place for a while now, to see if I could see the bats that live in the old rail tunnel. There is a great park with a toilet and places to sit and also a bbq. The tunnel was fascinating as there two ways where you could walk into it. One was a walk along a dirt track and the other was down some stairs. We did both. Very dry at the moment with little rain but still worth the visit . And we did see the bats even though you can’t get close to them
