Johnsonville State Historic Park

Reviewed By THeath11 - Linden, Tennessee

The 8th grades from Linden Middle Schooll went to Johnsonville State Park for a Civil War exhibition. They loved it! The park employees are so nice and knowledgeable. This was the third year we've visited, but the first time for the Civil War displays outside. We are fortunate to have such a nice facility nearby that welcomes groups of students and their many questions. I highly recommend watching the video in the welcome center. As many times as I've seen it, I still enjoy it.

Loretta Lynn's Ranch and Museum is a must see if you are in the area. We spent the better half of a day visiting. Lots to see, and tour reasonably priced. We even ate at her restaurant down the road. Loved ever minute of it.

Waverly Train Explosion Memorial Museum

Reviewed By DyersburgTraveler - Newbern, Tennessee

This is a museum with much more than meets the eye. When you first see it, this appears to be only another caboose museum on the side of a railroad. But actually it's a very moving memorial to a huge tragedy.

Inside you will find photos, videos, first-hand accounts and official analysis of a train disaster that changed the way rail accidents were handled nationwide.

On Feb. 24, 1978, a derailed tank car containing liquefied petroleum gas exploded. The resulting fire killed 16 people in Waverly, injured 43 more and nearly destroyed the downtown area.
Twenty-three cars of the train actually derailed on Feb. 22. It was two days before attempts to unload any of the cars took place, and actually never did. Crews were just arriving to do it when the tanker exploded. The tank car had been lifted up and propped on the side of another derailed car, so crews could reopen the tracks. The tank car was checked often for leaks. Then two days later something set off the explosion. The propped-up tank car shot into downtown Waverly like a rocket, spewing fire over a large area. Fire units from as far away as Nashville, and into Kentucky responded.

What may sound like a list of errors in judgement in handling the situation was actually approved operational procedures in 1978. This disaster caused all of that to change.

If you go, take time to learn about the people involved, see the exhibits and view the monument on the outside of the museum. The caboose today sits in the exact spot the ruptured tank car sat in on that day in 1978.

Directions: When traveling along U.S. 70 through Waverly, you will see a huge overpass. This will be Tenn. 13. The caboose museum is just to the east of, and almost under, that overpass. While traveling, U.S. 70, turn at the first railroad crossing east of the Tenn. 13 overpass, then turn back west on Railroad Street. The caboose is easily seen from U.S. 70, but a fence, and the railroad, prevents direct access from this highway.

What a fantastic skydiving experience! From start to finish, the whole process was organized and made me feel very secure about jumping out of a moving airplane. My friends and I did our very first tandem jump with Music City, and we had the very best time. Our instructors were fantastic, and my instructor Mike was the best. He was super engaging and funny, which was a great distraction during the whole process, since you do you spend a good amount of time waiting and prepping before you step foot on the train. While we waited, we were encouraged to sit outside with the staff and watch them pack the parachutes. They were super accommodating in taking a dozen pictures for us while we waited. Then we got strapped into our gear, and given our training, which was super thorough and very clear. I purchased a video package, so my videographer , Charlie, conducted my pre-jump interview, which was awesome. Then life got REAL. We got in the plane, we ascended, and before I had enough time to freak out, Mike and I were airborne, and IT. WAS. AMAZING. We did about a minute of free fall (it goes very quickly) and then a nice slow canopy descent, and a soft seated landing. Mike was great. He checked on me during every step of the process, and told me I rocked the house during the jump. If I were a local, I would totally schedule my next jump with Music City in the next few months. If you're in the Nashville area, and looking to take this particular plunge, you must dive with Music City. I think I'm officially an adrenaline junkie now. Thanks guys!
