I read whatever I could find in English before I went to Solovetsky; the most comprehensive coverage is "Solovki : the story of Russia told through its most remarkable Islands by Roy R. Robson, which I recommend to the serious traveler.
We arrived from a private tour boat in the White Sea and were met by a guide; we spent about three hours touring the Monastery complex and the Gulag Museum. Although recent history is dark, we found the larger picture of the 15th century founding of the Orthodox Monastery which emerged 100 years later as one of the most influential religious centers in all of Russia to be the interesting focus. The Monastery community was also one of the wealthiest landowners in Russia at that time becoming the economic and political center of the White Sea region. The churches and museum house characteristically beautiful icons.
The complex includes several churches, fortifications, walls, towers, etc., necessary to accomplish the great work of this community over the centuries. From the 16th century onward, it was a center of Christianity, a place of pilgrimage, and a depository for manuscripts.
Here and there are small collections of souvenir shops and other tourist concessions. We had fair weather but not bright sun. The Monastery complex is in the midst of what is likely decades long renovation and repair. I didn't find this especially concerning or even distracting, but it is also hard to imagine that the work will ever be completed.

The tourist center offers a very interesting variety of tours. We did 4 tours: to the Monastery itself, the Gulag Museum, Sekirnaya Skete, and Bolshoi Zayatsky Island. Tour prices are very reasonable. The tour guides were excellent in all instances, thoroughly professional and extremely well informed. Book early as the tours fill up quickly. Unfortunately, nothing is offered in English.

I am a bit doubtful about guided tours, but the one we took was really exciting! First we had a walk during which the guide spoke about the island and it's history. Then we went by boat on a canal and lake tour, really unforgettable! Then we went to Sekirnaya mount. And to end the tour we visited the botanical Gardens. The guide was an real expert, she prepared a wonderful tour and answered all our questions!

Школа юнг на Соловецких островах при учебном отряде Северного Флота базировалась в местном Кремле и бывшем ските Савватьево в 12 километрах от Кремля, комплектовалась юношами-добровольцами в возрасте 15—16 лет Некоторые юноши, приписав себе возраст, попали туда в более раннем возрасте. Как, например,14-летний будущий писатель Валентин Пикуль.

Петровская часовня - небольшая белая восьмигранная часовня с зеленой крышей, расположенная рядом с центральным входом в Соловецкий Кремль и рядом с очень похожей часовней Александра Невского. С часовней Александра Невского Петровскую часовню будут сравнивать всегда - они не просто стоят рядом друг с другом, но и как сестры похожи. Правда, в архитектурном смысле, в плане изящества и, я бы даже сказал элегантности, Петровская всё таки уступает, кажется более простенькой. Не буду писать "обязательна к посещению", так как для посетителей самого сердца Соловецкого монастыря Петровскую часовню просто не миновать.

Часовня Александра Невского (или Александровская часовня) - небольшая белокаменная восьмигранная часовенка, с синеватым куполом и крошечной золотой главкой, расположена в центре поселка Соловецкий, рядом с Царской пристанью. Изящество сооружению придают четыре фронтона по периметру и по две колонны, как бы придерживающих каждый из фронтонов. Первые ассоциации, которые родила у меня часовня - это отличный ориентир и прекрасной место для назначения встреч наравне с ещё тремя внешне похожими друг на друга часовнями (но Александровская, на мой взгляд, всё-таки изящней и красивее), находящимися в центре поселка. Для меня, впервые прибывшему на Большой Соловецкий остров, она как-то резко бросилась в глаза и отложилась в памяти.

Гиды девушки все зажрашиеся.Ведут себя как королевы мира.Приезжают на заработки из соседних городов .Половину не знают о Острове и о его Истории.Каждая рассказывает от себячину. Проще и лучше взять гида мужчину или распросить у местных.К примеру что в озерах военные топили технику когда уходили с острова не расскажут.И что есть озеро где скотомогилиник был тоже.А как вы знаете вся вода на острове пока из озера и все озера соеденяються.
