Pelee Island Winery

We were there Saturday of the labor day long weekend. The tour was great, tasted all of the grape varieties, Brandon was very knowledgeable in regards to the history of the Winery and the island and the winemaking process. We tasted a great variety of wines, it was a very light hearted tour, not like any other winery tour I've been on. The food outside was very reasonable and so was the wine by the glass, they even had a band for entertainment. Make sure you get a place to stay on the island so you can enjoy more of it. The staff is young and very friendly, but the tour is not stuffy. I truly enjoyed it and would definitely go again.

Fish Point Nature Reserve

Follow a clearly marked walking trail to the southern-most point in Canada. It's a spectaular view, very clean and, if you're there early in the day, a great place to break out a thermos and enjoy the first coffee/tea of the day as the sun rises. Be aware it can be a little buggy going along the trail so prepare yourself. As well, do not attempt to swim in these waters - very tempting but you have to be an experienced undertow swimmer and it's not recommended. There's a great beach not far away (across from the campgrounds) so save the swimming for there.

We pre-booked this tour mostly because we were unsure of the weather. We did not travel over with a vehicle or bikes. Our guide Sarah was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the island. She answered all our questions and made a stop at the bakery...MoreWe are so glad you enjoyed your tour and visit to the Island! Thanks so much for taking the time to review :D

Pelee Island Heritage Centre

You definitely feel transported in time when you visit Pelee Island and visiting the Heritage Centre, just across from the ferry docks, is an excellent place to start. If this is your first visit and/or you haven't read up on Pelee Island history, I'd say it's mandatory just so you can appreciate the island. The island itself is unlike any other place in Canada and seems forgotten in time which is both a blessing and a curse. I highly recommend staying for a weekend and exploring the island, especially with bikes if you've brought them. We had an amazing weekend of cycling, wine tasting, swimming and boating all at a relaxing pace that lets you really soak in the vibe. Don't be in a hurry and have an appreciation for ecology and a small town feel and you'll really start to unwind and enjoy yourself. We did!

We called ahead and we quoted for bike rentals. When we arrived to pick bikes up around noon for a drop off noon the next day we were charged two day rentals so $100 for two bikes To me that's a day rental so that was not made clear on the phone. Bikes were decent it is the best way to tour Pelee Island and it is flat place to bike. But had I know it was a two day rental in advanced I would have brought own bike.

The Sassy Magpie Studio & Shoppe

The Sassy Magpie is a charming Gallery/Boutique located in the middle of Pelee Island, Ontario. Featuring Artisan jewelry, original artwork and unique summertime clothing & accessories. We also carry fun & funky home & cottage decor items, and a small but lovely selection of metaphysical & spiritual items including crystals, singing bowls, incense and Buddha's.

This little boutique is just Darling! It carries very unique and beautiful quality women's clothing in a variety of price ranges, as well as scarves and jewelry, and some really different and amazing men's wallets as well! When you buy something at The Sassy Magpie, you aren't going to find 10 other people wearing that same item like you do when you buy something from a mall! A larger sign at the intersection where it is located might make it a bit easier to find...we did have to look twice to find it..but it was worth the time and effort and is definitely worth a visit if you are on the island!

Stone Road Alvar Nature Reserve

Reviewed By Adam W - Katy, Texas

I visit Pelee Island yearly with a primary focus of photographing snakes and amphibians. Stone Road Alvar is the place where I spend the vast majority of the time on each trip. Every snake species on Pelee Island can be found in the Stone Road Alvar area along with plenty of other wildlife. If you are a lover of the outdoors or wildlife this is a must visit area.
There are a couple of distinct areas within the Stone Road Alvar complex to discuss. First, as you go along Stone Road there are a couple entrances to foot trails one of which is signed. The entrances are typically overgrown and not very obvious, you can park on the side of the road if driving this is not a high traffic area. The foot trails go off into a semi wooded area all growing on top of limestone (called an Alvar, hence the name) and a good spot to see some wildlife. This type of bedrock provides ideal habitat for the Blue Racer.
The second distinct area here is the shoreline of Lake Erie which is unlike any other portion of Pelee Island. If you take Stone Road down to the end there is a small U-shaped parking area with room for a couple vehicles. There is typically a pretty obvious trail just outside the parking area that will take you into the woods and over to the shore (at times this is very overgrown). Alternatively walk out of the parking area and go to the left directly over to the shore. The shoreline here is filled with glacial grooves and limestone pieces stacked on top of each other. Tread lightly because most of the pieces of limestone have snakes hiding underneath them. Snakes are incredibly common here it is easy to see hundreds basking in the sun among the rocks when the weather is agreeable while only walking half a mile. The width of the shoreline varies depending on Lake Eries depth i've seen it 50 feet wide and at other times nonexistent.
A forewarning is that biting black flies may be incredibly bad here depending on the weather any given day. Bring along bug proof clothing so that you can survive them if it's a bad day.
