Plage de Luengoni

Reviewed By macf1an - Sofia, Bulgaria

Perfect, salt-like sand, clear and calm water, big rock formations, carved by wind and waves, tranquility. Shadow is provided by a long line of trees, serving as a parking shade as well. There is rarely anyone there, so you will have it all for yourself (but behave!). The only problem is that there is nothing within reach - nor food, nor water... so bring your own supplies, remembering to take the trash afterwards.

Lifou Island

Start your life of organising your own Day trip excursions from the ship ( we went on Royal Caribbean) with this island.
BYO snorkel /flippers or rent from the locals. Head off the boat up the hill to Jinek bay. Please don't fuss about paying a small fee to locals for protecting their reef. When you visit other trashed reefs later you will realise how important it is for the locals to defend their island habitat plus their income. Its a SMALL fee! Grab a noodle to support you while you snorkel for as long as you like ( its tiring without knowing it). Crystal clear water, amazing fish and coral. If you go in rainy season, it might rain! Surprise! I didn't know but rain water makes the water go a bit hazy. If its raining when you arrive you might like to check out the view from the top of the hill where the chapel is. More beautiful from out side than in. Lovely landscaping done by locals on the way up and a well kept path. Locals are happy to sell you pawpaw (papaya) coconuts in season for reasonable prices. They will accept Australian and American dollars here.
At the beach where the tender boats pull in you can continue snorkelling. If you look at the wharf from the where you arrive on your tender, on the right side you see some sandy Beaches. Along these Beaches in the sea grass about 2-10 m off shore you will probably find sea turtles.
Just to repeat this information to you if you are walking back from Jinek Bay and come down to the bay where you can see the Cruise ship moored you will see a wharf/jetty in front of you which where you can get back on the tender boats. To your left is the sea turtle beach. On your right is more snorkeling and swimming.
The turtles have been there over some time according to other guests and to other travel/cruise review sites.

Notre Dame de Lourdes

This was a port stop. The walk to the top of the hill will take between 25-30 minutes. It is steep in parts and very steep at the end with several steps. Not recommended for handicap or physically impaired individuals.
Once at the top it does afford some fabulous views of both sides of the island. Was hot and humid. Also found that bug spray came in handy.

Baie de Jinek

This is by far the best place to swim and snorkel in Lifou. If you are part of a cruise ship get here as early as possible to enjoy the crystal clear waters and coral and fish before the masses arrive and stir up the sand reducing visibility. If you get here early you are likely to see large sea turtles and teams of tropical fish. It sometimes helps to have small amounts of bread to feed and attract the fish.

Lagoon Safaris

The dive centre is situated in the tribal lodgings of Mr Benoit Bonua on the waterfront where the cruise ships arrive. We organise 2 tank half-day dive trips to the untouched reefs on the north west coast of Lifou. These dive sites, well known for excellent visibilty, beautiful reefs and giant colorful fan corals, are very popular with photographers. We also organise introductory dives and dive training. We are a small dive centre and only cater for 8 divers per outing so it is necessary to book ahead.

Wonderful diving experience, lovely people, organised, knowledgable, awesome visibility and so much to see. We were met at the dock by Lagoon Safaris after getting the 1st Tender off the Pacific Jewel, There wasn't a diving shore tour available through P & O for Lifou, so I searched independently and contacted Annabella she was very helpful and accomodating for our group, the Dive Master Edward was very knowledgable even though his English was limited, he was very perceptive and we felt safe in his care. Patrick our boat driver was also a lovely guy with limited English, we had a great time and look forward to going back again soon, Thanks Lagoon Safaris for a great time.

We arrived by cruise boat and had been told of the great Snorkelling here. Now my family have snorkeled on the GBR so they were a bit sceptical. We walked over the hill and paid our money and snorkeled. I have been snorkeling ay daydream island BUT this place was amazing so many fish and colours. We had a great day! Warning wear your reef shoes as gettinto the water the coral on the walk is VERY hard on your feet.
