Makoshika State Park

Encompassing more than 11,500 acres at an elevation of 2,069 feet, this park features fossil remains of dinosaurs.

The morning light was gorgeous. We enjoyed hiking the Diane Gabriel trail. The trail was mostly easy except for the few tall stairs up to the fossil. People with bad knees will probably have issues with those steps. I wish that we could have spent more time in the park and explored the visitor's center. The visitor's center didn't open until 10am, but we had to hit the road for our next generation.

Glendive Dinosaur & Fossil Museum

The Glendive Dinosaur & Fossil Museum presents its exhibits in the context of Biblical history.

Note that this museum tells things from a biblical perspective, so if you believe in evolution--it's probably not the place for you, unless you're open-minded. That being said the fossils and dinosaurs are super impressive and it was only $14 for two adults. We're currently on a kid free vacation but would LOVE to bring our little guy back!

Frontier Gateway Museum

Reviewed By TMMao - WA

This little museum is a gem. It's located just off the I-90, right next door to the pricey, weird, creationist dinosaur museum. The Frontier Gateway is free and full of interesting items.

The upstairs is an olio of collections donated by locals, bits of geology and history, including suits of armour (yes!), old telephones, clothing exhibits, Native American items, a small shelf of books for sale (only a quarter for a paperback), and rough agates. There's some organization but mostly items are grouped like by like in glass cabinets and in the open. Really interesting stuff, but not a lot of cohesion.

But then, you go downstairs, and you see something really cool. They've done a recreation of a frontier small town, with doctor's office, dentist's office, millinery, grocer, etc. All set up behind glass, but just as they would have been. We were all blown away by the detail and the depth and breadth of the items they had that showed how people lived in Montana a hundred years ago. Really, this should be the upstairs. I wonder if everyone knows to go downstairs.

Outside are more gems--a whole collection of vehicles, buggies, surries, etc, including a sleigh. There's a sod-roofed house, and old one-room school house and some farm equipment.

Our whole family loved this place. I ended up giving them a donation. Great stop in Glendive.

Going across the bridge and back is a pretty short walk. We love starting on the east side of the bridge (the side by Reynolds Market) and walking west (towards the big building with GTA on it) at sunset. You can also walk underneath the bridge towards the river. We have taken family photos under the bridge before...but all too often there is litter and trash under the bridge.
