The 9 Best Things to Do in Freeport, United States

September 6, 2017 Jacquiline Darosa

Freeport is the county seat and largest city of Stephenson County, Illinois. The population was 25,638 at the 2010 census, and the mayor of Freeport is Jodi Miller, elected in 2017. Freeport is known for hosting the second Lincoln-Douglas debate of 1858, and as "Pretzel City, USA", named after the heritage of its Germanic settlers in the 1850s and the Billerbeck Bakery pretzel company that started as a result of their arrival. Freeport High School's mascot is the Pretzel to honor this unique heritage.

Americana at it's best. I arrived on Labor Day & the American Flags were flowing. The founding fathers installed street lights on the park boulevard with flag holders on both sides of the pole. What an impressive sight. The park has a Band Stand, Putt Putt golf, Fire Truck, Kid Equipment, Carousel, Water Fall, Paddle Ducks, Picnic Tables & Hiking & Biking Trails. It is thickly covered in trees, which gives plenty of shade. The locals get really upset, if there is a discussion about raising the price on the Carousel which is $.25. This is a rare beauty when discussing city parks.

Tiny little park and easy sight-seeing opportunity. Well done markers that explain a piece of our political history. As other reviews have stated, do not miss Union Dairy next door! Their Coconut Explosion is incredible!!!

We were recently in Freeport and went to Little Wrigley Field. It was very nice with the ivy and scoreboard. We were a little disappointed that the field wasn't bigger so it could have been used for little league ballgames. Seems like if they spent all this time and money it should have been made usable for the little league teams. Other than the size it was a very nice replica of Wrigley Field.

The wines were very tasty and we bought several bottles. I loved the casual, cozy atmosphere. Barrels for tables, games and puzzles to work on while you sat around. We ate a lunch plate of cheeses, sausage, and other assorted snacks. Would certainly recommend

Jane Addams Recreation Trail

Started walking at the entrance near US 20 and got a few miles before turning around. Trail is flat and in the shade, which was clutch. Very pleasant walking, passed by some people on bicycles. If you want you can walk to Wisconsin on the trail! There were a lot of bugs and the next day I noticed a ton of bites. But I would do this again, and aim to make it into Wisconsin. Walking across state lines would be cool!

You have to check out the website. The nations oldest, continuous amateur theaters. The plays are wonderful. A small venue that the cast can really play to the audience. I wish I could make them all. You really forget that this is not a big time playhouse.

Luecke's Antique Mall

Reviewed By Kev521 - Freeport, Illinois

It is an old antique store. You need to go up to the second and third floor so if you can't do stairs you are out of luck. It is an old apartment building that you go room to room to room to room. If you can't find it here you can't find it anywhere. Mostly small stuff. Collection items. No real furniture. Some art. I think it has a large flee market feel. Prices are very good. There are some vendors that have some nice items. If you are looking for high quality antiques you might find it but you will have to really look. If you are looking for a piece for a collection you will find it if you look hard enough. Stop by. If it is not your cup of tea you can turn around and leave but if it is what you like you will be there for a good hour.

If you like taking a walk in the woods this is it. You can go from woods to meadow to walking in a stream bed to a pine grove. They loop and loop so when you are ready to leave it is only a short walk to the car but if you want to keep going you can. Call the park district if you have a group. The education building in interesting. Nice building to rent for outdoor functions also. I love going after a nice rain and smell the nature. Leave the Ipod in the car and listen to nature all around you. Just wonderfull
