Mostly jutting northward from its largest city of Amsterdam and its capital of Haarlem, the Noord-Holland region has much more to offer beyond those two wonderful cities. At Muiden is the magnificent Muiderslot Castle, as if it stepped out of a fairy tale. Showing more wear but no less interesting is Brederode Castle at Santpoort. At Zaanstad is Zaanse Schans, one of Holland’s top tourist destinations and a family-friendly open air museum of windmills, traditional buildings, crafts and shops.

I had heard about this tower online but only did it because our group had some time to spare between activities. We did a tour of the old church tower where we climbed up to the top (from which there were great views!) and learnt about the history of the place as we ascended through each of the floors. The tour guide was great and very knowledgeable about the history behind the tower. Definitely more interesting than I expected and well worth the €8 spent!

We had over 7hrs to kill before our flight so scoured the airport for things to do, we stumbled upon the Panorama Terrace. It was brilliant a huge space that even had an empty disused aircraft for you to board and look around. It was very windy and cold there but would imagine in the summer would be a lovely place to sit and watch the daily goings on of the airport. They are doing works to this area and when these are complete the place will be a great place to visit. They are building a new bar and restaurant which will be a great place to chill in the summer. There are picnic tables and seating areas so you can bring your own food or takeaway food from the airport outlets. I wish we still had something like this at our local airport in the UK, its great place to kill time.

Enjoy the breathtaking views atop one of the highest points in the heart of Amsterdam. The Tower is open to the public for the first time in 114 years, join our custodians up the windy staircase and enjoy the mysterious artworks that adorn this iconic Amsterdam landmark.
