Cittadella Visitors' Centre

Entrance to the Cittadella Visitors' Centre is €5 and is accessible via Castle Hill by making a sharp right and down a set of stairs or via the lift. The Visitors’ centre is located within the Cittadella’s old water Reservoir, it reinforces the historical ties that link it with Rabat and the natural landscape bringing the story of the Cittadella to life Using touchscreens, visitors can access the information in 8 languages, Maltese, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. The island of Gozo is rich in history and natural beauty, resources which, woven in with local customs and traditions, were key factors in creating this new tourist attraction. Being greener, less densely populated and urbanised than Malta, Gozo boasts an idyllic lifestyle that draws inspiration from its unique island setting The visitor experience culminates in a dramatic 360° Cittadella Show, set within an impressive theatrical space created by the high arches of the former water Reservoir.

The Citadella visitor centre with its exhibition depicting the history is worth visiting. It is a small exhibition and free to browse. There is a very well done Audio Visual show which is included in a ticket which features 3 or 4 places of interest within The Citadel. It is a very new centre and worth visiting before entering the main Citadel area.

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Reviewed By BigHugh51 - Adelaide, Australia

Our full-day guided tour of the island of Gozo had taken us to the Citadel. One of the attractions within the Citadel is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
While it is a relatively plain structure on the outside compared to many other cathedrals, the interior is splendid. Its fittings, statues and decorations are simply beautiful.
Worth the extra admission fee when visiting the Citadel!

Gunpowder Magazine, Silos, WWII shelters & Battery

Reviewed By Welshwasp - South Wales

Visit this whilst within the Citadel, it can easily be missed but gives a different perspective on the area.It is on a donation basis only but you are given looks if you do not oblige. The area on first glance is very small but if you are not claustrophobic there are narrow walkways up steps into the actual Silos although they are not well indicated.Do not enter as a large group and not suitable for those with limited walking ability.

Old Prison in Victoria, island of Gozo

Reviewed By Writers-Haven - Atlanta, Georgia

The Old Prison is located inside the Citadella, so it's a great quick stop to make while you are exploring the Citadella. The prison itself is very small, but I very much enjoyed it, as there were very detailed explanations on the history of the prison, covering all facets of everyday life, such as health, diet, and clothing.
Whereas many other prisons have a darker and more gruesome history, the Old Prison of the Citadella appeared to have been very humane to it's prisoners, which usually were not there for long.
It does not take very long to walk through the entire prison and read all the history, so I would definitely give this one a go if you have the chance to.

Gozo Museum of Archaeology

Reviewed By Perry S - Thrapston, United Kingdom

I'm as big a fan of a reconstructed amphora as the next tourist on Gozo but I have to confess that this sad collection of dusty relics laid out across a number of rooms writhing the Citadel was a disappointment. I had high hopes given the rich history of the building it is housed in but it was like something you saw on a 3rd-year school trip back in the 70's.
Poorly labelled and unimaginative- an opportunity missed...

Heart of Gozo - Il-Hagar

It is an audio-visual,fine arts and historical museum that tells a story. It is unique in the Maltese Islands in that its construction, including a medieval wing, was conceived and designed as a modern multi-mediatic museum that includes audio-visual halls and interactive points on every floor. Basically this museum and cultural centre, displays a rich collection of historical and artistic artifacts.

Visited this delightful little museum early September. It is situated just off the busy St Georges square in the old part of Victoria and can be easily missed if you are not careful, but please , take time to seek out this little gem of Gozo history. The museum has been beautifully renovated and the mix of ancient meets modern has been sympathetically considered. Beautiful paintings sit along side historic artefacts , something of interest for everyone. Areas of Seating and informative video add to the experience. The museum is obviously close to the heart of the several volunteers who donate their time to help run it. It is truly a credit to all concerned.
