Claytor Lake State Park

Reviewed By Sandra E - Beckley, West Virginia, United States

Claytor Lake State Park is unbeatable for camping, picnics, boating, parties, fishing, weddings, photographics, wildlife, & great birding. The park staff is great & will help you with anything. Camping is hindered only by a lack of a good reservation system. I once had to sit in my camper 6 hours to get into a site that would fit my 5th. Wheel. You can't just reserve your site. I have not been able to camp there once this season even though my camper is boarded at Hales boateL, JUST 100 yards from the park entrance.
The marina is small & the slips are difficult to maneuver in & out of. It's an old marina that needs upgraded. There is room to add slips for larger boats but like many of the state parks, money is a problem.
Picnic sites are great & restrooms are clean & handicapped accessible- except for the one beside the marina. Again, lack of funding is the problem.
Birding is excellent and Osprey nests are viewable. Big blue herons & piliated woodpeckers are numerous.
Park fees are reasonable & fishing, parking handicapped areas are throughout the park.

Nice and varied lunch menu in a very relaxing setting. Presentation of plate is very appetizing and food is delicious. Homemade potato chips make a great appetizer and the house salad is very fresh. Sandwiches are very tasty and filling. The desserts are outstanding. After your meal you can browse thru the market and adjoining buildings which have a variety of goods.

This is a great ballpark for watching the Pulaski Yankees play. There is not a bad seat in the park. Very clean and roomy seats. Ticket prices are very reasonable- $5/$8/$11. The food is good - especially the soft serve ice cream. Fun night for all of us.

Draper Valley Golf Club

Reviewed By loves2travelandmore - Forest, Virginia

Draper Valley Golf Course provided enough challenges in a scenic setting. It has rolling hills and is nicely landscaped. In the background are view of the mountains. Play was slow because of some pokey players ahead; a ranger would have been handy to ensure that play was progressing in a reasonable fashion. Overall, it is a nice course and we are glad to have played it.

Just two little pull offs on each side of the road but well worth a few minutes of your time to catch the views of the area. Great spot to watch the sunset. There's also an old chimney left standing from some sort of structure there. Didn't take time to read the signage. I'll get that on the next visit.

We took the Casino tour to Bethlehem, Pa with this company. we were picked up at a designated area in Richmond. It was a two night stay tour. It was wonderful. The driver Paul and the hostess Linda were great . Paul was a confident driver and Linda was personable and funny. She told lots of cute little jokes , strolled the aisle visiting with everyone on the bus and knew all of our names without having to ask. Played quite a few games of bingo. That helped pass the time. . We had a great time at the Sands Casino and hotel and it was so stress free knowing that Paul would be driving us home. We have been on other trips with this company and they are always enjoyable and fun. If you . want to leave the driving to someone else, try this company. they offer lots of wonderful trips to many different places and they have different pick up points along the way.

A nice 15-20 minute drive outside of Pulaski, which is off the beaten path anyway. Only one way in and out but a beautiful little winding drive through the Western Virginia forests. Beautiful quite lake with inexpensive boat rentals and camping spots near the water. Super friendly staff at the camp store/boat ramp and docks. Nice little hiking trails.

Draper Mountain Bike Trail

Reviewed By Hank H - Pulaski, Virginia

Draper Mountain, named for John Draper and his family, is situated south of the Town of Pulaski. The terrain is steep, rising up from the Town to the Draper Mountain Overlook that provides expansive vistas of the nearby mountain ranges and valleys. The Town of Pulaski owns much of the north side of the Mountain and has opened the area up for mountain bike trail construction. Since 2009, a group of dedicated cyclists have been out there with fire rakes, chain saws, pry bars and Pulaski axes, chiseling out trails that wind back and forth in an effort to make the climb up the mountain accessible.

My family and I mostly hike these trails - close to town but completely away from it all in nature.

The interlocking web of trails includes Dirt Road (from the bottom) and Easy Street (first right from Dirt Road). These are open walks or easy-ish rides on old road beds, albeit with moderate steepness. Sneakers would be fine and poles aren't required.

All other trails, TNT, McTwist, Cotton Candy, Lollipop, No Quarter and Draper Drop, are single track mountain biking of high quality, yet close to town. Go as long or as short as your lungs and legs will take you, then descend back into town for a great meal and lodging. Hiking these will require boots or good hiking shoes and is impacted by rain/snow/mud.

If you're hiking and have two cars, drop one at the bottom lot and enjoy a great descent with views from the top lot, i.e. Draper Mountain overlook. This will be 2.1 - 2.6 miles depending on which trails.

Directions to the upper trail-head: Easy. From I-81, take exit 89a toward Pulaski. When US Rt 11 breaches Draper Mountain at the overlooks (great views each way), park in the *left hand* overlook. The trails and maps/info kiosk are just into the woods. If traveling from Pulaski, take Washington Avenue (past the Historic Depot) which becomes Rt 11 south. Again, turn into the *right hand* overlook.

Directions to lower trail-head and parking from the historic Pulaski Train Depot, home of Pulaski Bikes (rental, sales and service) and Dora Trail trail-head (spur from New River Trail). Note that the parking lot is easily visible on your left after travelling a little over 1 mile up Valley road, just after you drive under the power lines. You'll see the kiosk there. If you'd like more detail or want to join a group ride (experienced mountain bikers), call Mike McMillian at Pulaski Bikes.
