Monhegan Island

A square-mile rock off the coast of Monhegan that is home to 70 residents.

The boat trip to Monhegan sets the stage for a coastal, sunny, wind and sun-filled hike around the island's outer edge. Many little roads and trails allow for day exploration of this historical small island, formerly a mid-19 th century community with its own school, post office, hotel, boarding houses, museum, an adorable little library--all the important things needed for slow life on a small island in Maine. Lots of artists creatives and crafters on island. There are minimal but good places to enjoy a meal, pick up baked treats made by stoic individuals eeking out a summer island existence on Mohegan. Walking only, no cars. You get the impression it's a big draw for the wandering individual looking for the meaning of life. A great recent island addition is the Monhegan Brewing Company, making very good island brew in several styles, Their fragrant Russian Imperial Stout at 10.2% for 10 oz pour is a great way to start your day drinking. IPA and Pale Ale were top notch. Around 8 offerings. Funky lobster cage-themed biergarden seating area adds to fun. I'd go back for a long wknd. After return trip on Hardy's Boat, take dinner at the seafood restaurant right at the boat landing. Really Fun Day and no damn internet.
