Cascade River State Park

Northshore park known for its breathtaking waterfalls.

Reviewed By Kayla G - Rochester, Minnesota, United States

The highlight of our trip up the North Shore was visiting Cascade State Park. We loved the waterfalls and were pleasantly surprised at how close to nature we could get. We were able to climb the rocks along the falls and the hiking trails are abundant. Compared to Gooseberry Falls, Cascade is much less crowded and more "authentic" in my opinion.

If you are up for a more challenging hike, follow the Lake Superior Trail/Hiking Club signs to Overlook Mountain and prepare yourself for a breathtaking view. In total, the hike is a 3.5 mile loop, but at Overlook Mountain, you can see for 50 miles and are able to get vantage points of Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Mountains. I suggest bringing a snack and enjoying it on the large rock that overlooks this area. Once you are there, you won't want to leave! Especially beautiful in the fall!!!

Stop in the park office for a hiking map. The people there were extremely helpful! I wish I could rate this higher than 5 stars!

Lutsen Mountain Tram

You won't find a better vantage point from which to view the Sawtooth Mountains and Lake Superior's dramatic coastline. This aerial gondola is one of the North Shore's most popular attractions, taking you on a scenic ride to the top of Moose Mountain, rising 1,000 feet over Lake Superior. The gentle ride at treetop level is an experience not to be missed if you're visiting the North Shore! Stop at the Summit Chalet at Lutsen Mountains, a beautiful mountaintop chalet welcoming guests for gorgeous views, relaxation, or for lunch, snacks, and beverages. Inside and outside deck seating is available overlooking Lake Superior. The Summit Chalet at Lutsen Mountains also hosts our Summit Chalet weddings, our premier destination wedding facility. Enjoy the mountaintop hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and fresh air. The Mountain Tram makes Moose Mountain the most accessible year-round mountaintop destination in Mid-America.

Lutsen Mountains

World class scenery and terrain. The ancient Sawtooth Mountains rise 1000 feet above the coast of Lake Superior-topography unlike any other Midwest locale. And that brings more of what you want in a ski trip. More runs. More elevation. More epic days. You'll find the very best Mid-America has to offer-the highest mountains, the most snow, and the breathtaking beauty of the North Shore. Lutsen offers 95 sweeping runs over four mountains with a lift-serviced vertical rise more than double that of other regional resorts.

Cacade River

Waterway running through Cascade River State Park on Minnesota's North Shore.

The trails around the river are well maintained and beautiful. Highly recommended a nice long hike day. Take time to dip your toes in and soak up the sun. Gorgeous plants and views. Not to be missed. There's one part on the northern more eastern side that has 168 steps or so. Big fun! It's way steeper than it looks in my photo. Almost like a ladder. Enjoy.

North Shore Winery

We stayed just up the road of the winery. This was one of my favorite parts of our weekend getaway. The wine is delicious and very reasonable, $8 for 5 tastings. We even stayed and shared a bottle and enjoyed the outdoors. Saturday's can be busy, but worth waiting. It's a cute place, and there is a trail you can walk as well. I can't wait for my next trip to Lutsen to stop by the winery again!

I can't think of anyplace I have been that I like more than the North Shore of Lake Superior. While there I always make a point to try and get out for at least one round of golf at SNGC. I love the course, and the surroundings. Usually there are 3 Nine hole courses to piece into 18 holes. The past couple of years they have bee reworking one course or another. I can't wait to try the latest update when I get back up there net fall. I'm usually up there late in the season. One year my wife and I golfed in high wind with sleet. Last year we closed out the course for the year and it was beautiful with fall colors. Any time of year it is a treat.

The Oberg Loop is a mostly easy hike that offers some beautiful views. The distance is short enough to tackle in just a few hours and the terrain is manageable enough for most people. Get there early to avoid the crowds and you won't be disappointed.
