The 8 Best Things to do Good for Big Groups in Victoria, Mahe Island

December 3, 2021 Roseanne Arnett

A day on foot is ample time to see Victoria, one of the smallest capitals in the world. Located on Mahe, one of the Seychelles' 115 granite and coral islands, Victoria is the republic's business and cultural hub. At its center sits the Victoria Clocktower, a national monument reminiscent of London's "Big Ben" that has kept ticking since 1903, unaffected by the modern glass and concrete development around it. Visit the local art galleries and craft markets to soak up the city's friendly charm.

Seychelles Islands Foundation

The remote wilderness of Aldabra Atoll, one of Seychelles' most distant islands, is over 1000 km southwest of the main island of Mahe. Aldabra is one of the world's largest raised coral atolls comprised of four main islands. Aldabra is the largest of the Seychelles islands, with a land area of around 155 km2. The ring of islands surrounds a central turquoise lagoon which is the tidal heartbeat of the atoll with millions of tonnes of water rushing in and out twice every day. Aldabra's geographical isolation, rough terrain and scarcity of fresh water have deterred large human populations from settling. As a result, Aldabra is significantly less disturbed than other atolls worldwide. It remains as an outstanding example of a coral atoll and, in 1982, was inscribed as a UNESCO Marine World Heritage Site. Famous for its 'champignon' terrain and relatively pristine marine life, the atoll is a refuge for many endangered and unique species. It is part of a global biodiversity hotspot and one of the world's natural wonders.

We stopped in as we where passing and we only really went for the giant tortoises. It’s a beautiful spot it really is, immaculately kept and while we only really went to see the giant tortoises, we had a good look round, enjoyed some lunch and a coffee in the park and also saw plenty of the huge fruit bats which are home there also. But the highlight was definitely the giant tortoises which you can pay €5 for a handful of food to feed them and then you can walk amongst them, touch them and feed them, we loved it! Highly recommend!

A spectacular view of the southern part of Mahe Island from this place. Also it is a historical location for Seychelles people where the first school was built here for slave children to study and queen Victoria ll visited here during colonial era.
