The 8 Best Piers & Boardwalks in Auckland, North Island

March 13, 2022 Milan Banda

The Māori call Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau — a maiden desired by 100 lovers, and a valuable territory fought over for centuries for its fertile land and natural harbors on the Pacific Ocean (to the east) and Tasman Sea (to the west). Today, it’s New Zealand’s largest city: A vibrant and diverse place where nature and urban life go hand-in- hand, with 48 volcanic cones, more than 50 islands, and 29,000 km of coastline and beaches just minutes away from the arts and shopping of the central city.

Westhaven Promenade

Coming from the CBD, we hoped to walk to the harbour bridge, but didn’t have quite enough time. We did however walk the Westhaven Promenade, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. There were good sculptures and interesting seating. We watched a sailing lesson for children and radio controlled model boats out in the marina. It was a shame that you walk through an industrial area and the back of boat yards to join to the Wynyard Quarter, although the area does seem to be under development. Better signage linking the areas would be a bonus!

Orakei Basin

This is a fantastic 4k walk, with mixed terrain, around the basin. I used to run the foreshore before the full loop was developed, and it's fabulous - particularly at high tide. We entered at Upland Rd and walked counter clockwise. We heard kōtare or king fisher singing, and spotted black and white shags nesting. The section along the rail line over the water is about five metres wide!! Note some sections on the Upland Rd side have stairs, and a lot of them!! I asked my brother if his legs were burning (he was fine, mine were). A lovely walk. Suggest best at mid or high tide. Go Orakei!

North Wharf

Walk a little further west form the viaduct harbour area and you are rewarded with an area being transformed form industrial life to a lively area of parks, play areas, art work, market stall, restaurants and cafes and boats. Just stroll and see how the waterfront is being transformed and how central it is to social life now. Some great looking bars and eateries and fun food stalls.

Princes Wharf

Reviewed By MDU54 - Philadelphia, United States

We are boarding a cruise ship here in two days. Rented an apartment at Princes Wharf and are within 10 minutes of Viaduct Harbour (tons of great restaurants and pubs and great place to people watch). We are also within a ten minute walk of where our cruise ship will dock (Queens Wharf). Our apartment is through Princes Wharf Select Apartments. The apartment is a 4 out of 5. There is also a Hilton Hotel that is on this wharf about 3 minutes walk from our apartment. Serveral places to eat (Hiilton has a very nice breakfast buffet). The apartments and hotel rooms have harbor views available at a higher price. The wharf area is safe and we felt safe walking around the downtown area of Auckland. There is construction in progress between the two wharfs but still a modest ten minute walk towing suitcases on wheels. Princes Wharf is not a place to visit for entertainment. It is an ideal location to stay and has some nice places to eat.
