The 8 Best Other Outdoor Activities in Pucon, Araucania Region

September 6, 2021 Roger Rusk

Deep in the Patagonian Andes, Pucon is a picture perfect town accessed by plane in summer or by a nine-hour drive or train ride from Santiago. A great base for adventure vacations, Pucon is crammed with visitors during summer months December, January and February. Watch molten magma ooze down Mount Villarrica, hop between hot and cold thermal pools at Termas Geometricas or take the reigns of Criollo horses to explore the Andes on horseback. For other expeditions, rent a car or mountain bike.

We spent a great afternoon in the Pillar canyon with Miguel and Eduardo from Canyoning Pucón. They were friendly and professional. What's more, we were provided all the gear including gortex shoes. We always felt safe and had a lot of fun. We highly recommend this activity with this agency for everyone who likes nature, water and a bit of adrenaline.

Pucon Aventura

Reviewed By alexcG9107OQ - Guadalajara, Mexico

Volcan Villarrica is the pearl of Pucon, standing tall above the landscape and the small vacation hotspot. I had the opportunity to climb Villarrica on 19-11-2017 with Pucon Aventura. I arrived to the agency at 06:30 with one other tourist to pick up our gear and meet our guide, Ricardo, and our secondary guide Jorge. Ricardo informed us that the weather should be good, but there might be some rain in the forecast in the early morning. We arrived at the base of the volcano at around 7:45 (after seeing a Puma on the way!) and immediately started our ascent. Being spring, there was snow from the very beginning of the hike. Once we passed the second ski lift, the conditions became more and more icy so we were told to put on our crampons. From here, the next 2 - 2.5 hours were very very icy, so much so that our guide was concerned about safely making it to the top. We finally reached some softer snow about 5 minutes from the top and ditched our bags. The volcano was incredible. The skies were clear near the summit, great for photos and viewing of the crater. What is more, we were the only group on the mountain! Ricardo said that in his ~1500 ascents over 13 years, this is the first time that he has led the only group! After about 20 minutes on top, we began our descent, hiking for about 30 minutes down steep terrain and then sliding on our butts (using the plastic mini sleds) for the next hour or so. The last 45 minutes of the descent were very powdery and flatter so we ended up walking the rest. The hike was pretty strenuous, especially because the whole hike was in the snow and due to the icy conditions. Ricardo and Jorge were very knowledgeable, friendly and made the experience doable for a newbie like myself. I'd recommend the hike and Pucon Aventura 100%. Tips: Bring strong sunblock, and even something to cover your face (scarf, bandanna). I got very bad sun burn and windchap even though I applied sunblock twice. Not the hardest hike from a cardio perspective since we went slow (even though there is a great elevation change) but very difficult walking in the snow/ice for hours. Lots of stress on the feet, ankles, calves, shins and knees when balancing and walking with crampons in a zig zag up/down the slopes.
