Lodge 96

Oudtshoorn is the town that averages 333 days sunshine a year! Lodge96 Backpackers has immaculate double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and the dorms (only 8 people at a time) also have their own bathrooms.Nearby are awesome mountain passes and scenic red hill drives (great to do with a mountain bike if you so wish), stunning waterfall picnic spots, & natural thermal baths (nice!). We can also arrange quad biking, abseiling, a visit to the famous Cango Caves,Ostrich Farms, kayaking on a gorgeous dam nestled against the Swartberg mountains and paintballing just down the road from us. Also within a 30 minute drive you can visit some excellent vineyards.

A Good Stop-Over

We rang the bell at Lodge 96 after a full day of travelling, feeling tired and in need of a hot shower. Matt was fantastic and offered us a dorm room all to ourselves. The room was the one closest to the street, but inside, it was very quiet. The beds were really sturdy and comfortable and there was plenty of storage space. The bathroom was basic but spotless. Matt was happy to recommend places to eat nearby as well as activities in the area.

Oudtshoorn Homestay Accommodation

Excellent and friendly

Reviewed By ettienefritz

During the first few days of the 2019 KKNK, we needed a family friendly place to stay at. WE came across this place via the internet and this looked like the most suitable place to reside at for those few days. Upon our arrival in the middle of the night, we were convinced that we made a great choice. Not only is the staff friendly, they go above and beyond what you would expect. Sharonay is the lady that we were in contact with since we came and till the day we left. There are many places where people say that you can call them anytime and they will be of assistance. Here at Homestay that is not just talk - they really do deliver. I would definitely come back to this place when I'm back in Oudtshoorn again.

Karoo glamping

Reviewed By Gillblack0

I was doing a road trip with a friend and she has stayed here often. We hired one on the tents rather than hassle to put up our own. The weather was starting to turn cold, but we still had 2 swims in the lovely pool. The owners are very friendly and we opted for the dinner you can request. There is a kitchen you can use for self catering, but the dinner provided was great. Before leaving in the morning we had a last swim. I will come back and spend more than a night here in the future.

Cosy backpackers

Reviewed By lesley s

I stayed one night as part of a tour. Nothing special from the outside, but when the gate opens and reveals the courtyard and secret little garden, it becomes quite charming. Basic but cosy room (I stayed in a family ensuite), great food - options for dinner include ostrich kebabs on the braai and is very reasonably priced. Good bar, lovely seating areas around the garden and fire. Pool on the small side, but overall great value for money. Felt very welcomed by all the staff and got to enjoy a beautiful sunset from the terrace.

Swartberg Backpackers

Get away from it all! Non-sharing family and friends Backpackers. Enjoy an Eco-friendly farm experience at the foot of the world-famous Swartberg Mountain Pass, 45km outside Oudtshoorn. Splash around in our swimming pool with nothing around you except for the sounds of nature, beauty, tranquility, captivating and breathtaking views of the Swartberg Mountains. Hike to the beautiful waterfall and drink pure fresh water straight from it. Solar and gas geysers, "donkey" for colder days, organic gardening, free range livestock, geese, rabbits. Be refreshed, re-energized and regenerated! All units are booked for you alone and not shared with other backpackers. Swartberg Backpackers is "Kids paradise". We offer pedal cars, target shooting with a paintball gun, catching and holding bunnies, canoeing in the farm dam, ride on a trailer hooked to a tracker to the mountain swimming pool and lots more. The accommodation will provide you with a fully equipped kitchen and a stove, oven, refrigerator and barbecue facilities with free wood. You can enjoy a waterfall, mountain and farm dam view from all the units. The Ark unit has a table tennis for those sport lovers. Instead of electricity, we use solar electricity, gas and wood fires. This means no TV. The solar electricity provides enough power to charge a laptop, cellular phone, room lights as well as a portable 12V fridge. There are solar geysers and gas to provide warm water and a stainless steel "donkie" for the overcast and rainy days. In the winter come and view the snow on the mountains. Gamkaskloof or "The Hell" is an exciting 2 hour 4x4 drive for the adventurers and is close by. There is plenty of flora and fauna to experience in the surrounds including eagles in the sky, trails of the Cape leopard, and the barking of wild baboons. Swartberg Backpackers is pet, biker and cyclist friendly.

Sparklingly clean facilities, magnificent host, gorgeous setting.

We stayed over for one night (too short) on a cycle ride that took us over the Swartberg pass the next day. The place was an oasis: clean, spacious, well equipped, with magnificent sunset views over the Swartberg. Beautiful braai area with ample supply of excellent braai wood, for the best coals... Host Louis was unbelievably accommodating and generous: collecting one of the guys (and his bike) on the day of our arrival who was suffering from exhaustion; and the next day collecting three of us and our bikes from Prince Albert (2 hr return trip) - all for a nominal fee. Sadly, we didn't have time to visit the mountain pool or waterfall, but will save this for our next visit which, hopefully, will not be too long. This provides shared accommodation, but we had the place to ourselves (4 people) which was super spacious and comfortable. Additional bonus was a quality table tennis table.... Thanks again Louis and family for your warm and generous hospitality!

We booked very last minute and when we arrived the host himself wasn't there, but we chilled with his mum and kids. When unjani arrived home he explained the rooms aren't available, but offered another place to stay too and a full refund. He was super cool and we would still recommend the place just for the people :)
