The 8 Best Classes & Workshops in Embajadores, Community of Madrid

May 11, 2022 Darleen Reid

So many of Madrid’s buildings look like castles, you’ll think you’ve stumbled into a fairytale. Even City Hall is astounding, with its white pinnacles and neo-Gothic features. A self-guided architecture tour can begin by the great bear statue in the central Puerta del Sol. Wander by the fanciful Royal Palace before absorbing the natural beauty of Retiro Park, then visit one of the city’s many museums. You could happily cap off each day by nibbling on forkfuls of paella while sipping Spanish rioja.

I was fortunate to spend 2 weeks at Tilde earlier this month. My goal in enrolling there was to try to reacquaint myself with the Spanish language, which I had studied in school 40 years ago, but had not spoken, read or really even heard since then. During that long lapse, I had forgotten most of what I once knew. I picked Tilde over the other language schools I considered because of its focus on teaching adults, and because I hoped that due to its small size, it could provide a student like me with more individualized attention than I might receive in another setting. It also happens to be located in an attractive and central part of Madrid, a very beautiful city. My experience at Tilde was fantastic. Each day I had lessons with two of the profesoras there. Not only were both of them great teachers; they were also an absolute pleasure to spend time with and come to know. They were very adept, dedicated, patient, persistent and fun. The Spanish language book upon which they base their lessons is intuitive, clear and easy to follow. This isn't to say that the work was not hard for me - it was (including serious daily homework). But I looked forward to my lessons each day, and I missed them and the teachers when my time there was over. I should also mention that the Tilde support staff was always responsive, gracious and helpful, and the guide who lead the cultural activities was extremely skilled and knowledgeable, and a great teacher of Spanish history, art and literature (among other topics). I strongly recommend this school to anyone who wants to learn Spanish, or to hone or improve upon language skills they already have. It was just a great overall experience.
