This tourist information centre is exceptional, we were met with a friendly smile and greeting from the staff on duty (4nov ) This centre has a brilliant display of the mining pioneers, local indigenous people and anything to do with the early history of the town, there’s an on-site underground mine you can visit, along with a mini lagoo with its own waterfall all located in a garden setting. There’s a cafe along with the usual local souvenirs and a recently opened indigenous art gallery ...don’t miss it.

Mount Isa City Lookout

Great walk up to the Mt Isa City Lookout. Wonderful views - took heaps of photographs of the different views, the destination signpost at the top and the painted water tank. Worth a visit at night as well, especially seeing the mine lit up. There are picnic tables & shelters, parking for ~10 cars, but no toilets.

Such a peaceful and beautiful river. It is great to spend a few hours near the lake for tranquility and calmness. The river water is clean. There is no traffic around this place, but there is a possibility to do cycling. If you want to escape from the city noise, this is a paradise to escape for quietness.

Mount Isa Mines Rodeo

Mount Isa Mines Rodeo is the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere. Staged on the second weekend of August annually, this event is on many cowboy and cowgirl's bucket list. The first Isa Rodeo was staged back in 1959. Called the Centenary Rodeo it comprised a rodeo competition including bullock riding, a wild steer race and open buckjumping championship. Back then it took weeks to walk the bucking horses in from Carandotta Station on the QLD-Northern Territory border to the old rodeo yards in Mount Isa at Kalkadoon Park. With a prize pool of 500 pounds on offer, the rodeo grew a mystique of its own. The rodeo organising committee’s vision was simple…..to “think big” and raise funds for much needed charities and put the new, remote town of Mount Isa on the map. Now labelled as one of the most iconic events in the country, it attracts over 30,000 attendees and competitors from all over Australia and the world and has gifted over $4.8m to charity in the north/west region of Qld.

Spent 3 hours on this well organized, informative Mine tour, Ian our guide was great and able to answer most questions that was thrown at him. Fantastic insight by the locals who developed this after the closure of the original working mine tours, With over 100,000 visitors this is testament to what they have achieved. Rounded off the tour with a cuppa tea and a Pastie in the crib room Definitely a tour to add to your list while in Mt Isa

This is a unique site to either stay a night or visit. Now a ghost town, the mining pit is unique in its beauty. Do not let looks deceive you..the water is toxic ( not radioactive) and should be avoided. A visit here is a history, geological and geography lesson wrapped up in one.
