The 8 Best Budget-friendly Things to do in Bath, Maine (ME)

June 23, 2021 Jasper Kershner

Having launched its first ship over 400 years ago, and still home to the Bath Iron Works shipbuilders, the city of Bath is proud of its maritime history. The Maine Maritime Museum celebrates this long heritage, with 25 acres of historic waterfront featuring original 19th century shipyards and exhibits. Named one of the "Best Small Cities in America," Bath offers visitors the opportunity to wander down treelined streets, along the Kennebec River and past beautifully restored 19th century homes.

You get everything - A rustic dock, historic fort, laid-back locals, a beautiful boat ride, hiking on an island, lighthouse tour, and picnic lunch opportunities with spectacular views. (There were even a wild blackberry or two to pop in my mouth.) If you only have one day in Maine (which would be a shame) you can't beat this trip. Make reservations ahead. I called 24 hours before and got the last two seats (cash only, pay on the boat.) There is no sign on the dock at Popham to indicate this is where the boat will meet you, but if you are parked next to the historic fort, you are in the right spot. (There is a portapotty next to fort if you need it before getting on the boat.) To top off your Maine experience stop by Anna's Water's Edge Restaurant on your way home (10 minutes away.) It's a rustic, hidden gem.

Informative staff who led us on a tour of the former ship making building during the early 1900's. The guide tours knew so much history and then we had a boat tour on the river around the Bath Iron Works which took us by 2 ships being built for the US Navy. It was a WOW event. History buffs and former military should put this on their bucket list.

A happen chance opportunity & one I am glad to have stayed to experience. The docent was charming, knowledgeable and the displays were interesting. I was alone, but there was a young family there at the same time & I noted with delight that the youngsters were interested and curious as well.
