We had decided to stop in Helsinki first before going on to St Petersburg. After reading some reviews about the Allegro Train we booked 2nd class tickets. We tried to upgrade to first class but they were sold out which was actually good because the 2nd class was great! We had comfortable seats, had a great lunch in the dining car, did immigrations & customs while on the train so once we arrived in St Petersburg we just walked out of the station. No lines, no waiting, no fuss. It was the fastest 3.5 hours ever along with a delightful experience! We highly recommend this and 2nd class is great!!

Helsinki Tram System

Reviewed By jennifermA5114KN - Bangor, United States

This was my main mode of transport around Helsinki. To me it makes no sense whatsoever to do a Hop On Hop Off Tour bus, when this is far more economical, and easy to use. Service is fast and frequent, and the best part is that you can purchase your tickets and passes right on your phone with the Helsinki public transport app. I wish every city would do that- it was nice having a ticket machine right in my pocket. I noticed that everything was fast and smooth because the authorities expected that everyone had bought a ticket, so there were no barriers or slow downs trying to tap in or out like you must do with other city transit systems. The honor system really speeds things up. Trams were clean and tidy for the most part, although sometimes I'd encounter a spilled beer on the floor. If I wasn't sure what I wanted to do just then, sometimes I'd get on a tram and just ride it until I decided to get off.

We took the island hopper option which allows a visit to three different islands in one day and offers flexibility around timing as the ticket is valid all day and the boats run about every 90 minutes. Suomenlinna is the most popular island and has the most to see (mainly the fortifications, along with six museums) but Vallisaari was my favourite as although it has some fortifications, it's more a nature visit than a history one. It also had some rather odd cartoon story boards which came across more like a children's 'learn to read English' than information. The third island, Lonna, is very small and I would recommend going there last (as the boat stops there on both outward and return legs) or missing it completely. Unless there is more to Lonna than meets the eye, I would struggle to fill the time between one boat and the next I think. The boats sell drinks & snacks. For €8 it's a bargain.
