The 7 Best Transportation in Dunedin, South Island

March 19, 2022 Janette Largent

Rare yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and the world's only mainland albatross colony share residence in Dunedin, New Zealand's oldest city. When you're not watching wildlife, this South Island Otago Coast town also boasts impressive historic architecture from its days as a gold-rush mecca. Visit the 1906 Flemish Renaissance railway station or the country's largest center of higher learning, which resembles Glasgow University, thanks to the area's early Scottish settlers.

Dunedin Railway Station

This beautiful building has to be on visitors' wishlists. The architecture is magnificent, a reminder of a bygone era when train travel excelled long before the jets arrived. The interior is also worth spending time in, particularly the home of the New Zealand sports hall of fame on the first floor with a wonderful array of memorabilia celebrating the achievements of our sports legends such as Peter Snell, Colin Meads and Susan Devoy. From the same station the daily heritage train service taking sightseers up the Taeri Gorge leaves, another great attraction not to be missed.

Airport Shuttles Dunedin

Reviewed By EntropyDaisy - Auckland, New Zealand

The shuttle picked me up from one of the uni halls where I was visiting, so it was super convenient. The driver called me a few hours earlier to ask if it was ok if she came to pick me up 15 minutes earlier than scheduled, which I agreed, and I appreciated the call. I think the price is quite reasonable compared to airport buses and shuttles in other NZ cities. Overall a good experience.
