Kildonan Museum

Reviewed By Charbala - Mundesley, United Kingdom

Someone has put a lot of thought into the exhibits in this gem of a museum. I really enjoyed my visit and especially the reconstruction of rooms in a house (bedroom, kitchen and lounge) with such attention to detail... Recipe books put out , Sunlight soap - one really felt that someone might live there. The beds made from driftwood are worth seeing and the explanation and photos of how fire places changed through the years. Makes one realise how hard life must have been.
A great place to research life in Outer Hebrides.
Museum staff cannot be more helpful if you have a question. Adjoining cafe great. Community craft shop run by the artists / craftsmen themselves on other side of courtyard is worth a visit too... Delightful textile and ceramic items for sale. Do support these artisans.

Askernish Golf Club

Askernish Golf Course is set on the Isle of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Originally designed and built in 1891 by Old Tom Morris, the course was lost for over 70 years before Master Greenkeeper Gordon Irvine stumbled across it on holiday and re-discovered its remarkable heritage. In 2008 the course was restored using almost the exactly the same techniques as it was built 117 years ago. At 6,259 yards the course can often be underestimated, even the keenest golfers are challenged by its unique terrain: formed around the naturally occurring grassy 'Machair' dunes unique to the North-West coast of Scotland. Askernish has gained world renown not only for its story as a lost Old Tom Morris course, but also for its delicate integration into the natural environment. It is oft-said that Askernish offers 'golf as it was meant to be', surrounded by the breathtaking landscape of South-Uist it is hard to disagree. It will be a round and golfing experience never to be forgotten.

Well, I found out about this re-discovered course and took the tiny road to it. Delightfully simple and historic. Clubhouse was closed, but with envelopes to leave your green fee for 6, 12, 18 holes...whatever. No carts, so it was a refreshing walk on a course that has been groomed to 1900 standards. Perfect. Outer Hebrides are amazing, wonderful, quiet, beautiful. What a great getaway place.

It was a lovely day, so we walked up the steep path to the statue (not actually as steep as it looks from the bottom!). The views up there are fantastic. Well worth the climb.

Uist Archaeology Tours

Reviewed By katetacular - Tallahassee, Florida

The tour was really great. Kate took us around and told us a lot about the history of the island, from the iron age onwards. The weather was pretty bad, and we had to cut the tour short as a result, but we still had...MoreI'm glad you had a good time on your tour, and I hope your feet dried out eventually. Enjoy the rest of your vacation! Kate

Flora Macdonald's Birthplace

Reviewed By antis - Scotland

There is some debate if this is fact Flora's Birthplace. She is more likely to have been born in Balivanich in Benbecula and educated at Nunton House near to Balivanich.
That this place is revered by many is justifiable.
Let's 'Carve Her Name With Pride' .....she was a brave lass.

We stayed in South Uist for 4 days and luckily the Dolphin trip fell on our second last day so no question about it, I had to book it.
Having been on several Dolphin trips before in various countries, I wasn't getting my hopes up so was happy just going out on the rib.
We arrived at Acarsaid in Eriskay and were met by Rory. There were 12 people in total including a guy who flew a drone over us to capture some footage!
About 30 mins into the trip, we were greeted by a pod of dolphins! There was a minimum of 5 and they were extremely playful, even coming up to the side of the boat!!
Rory was very knowledgeable about the area and made sure everybody was okay. It wasn't until afterwards that Rory said all but two outings to date hasn't seen Dolphins. Would highly recommend this trip to anybody.

Ormiclate Castle

Reviewed By Margaret P - Los Angeles, California

There's not much to the castle, and it's right next to a modern farming operation that uses the other buildings for storage. However, the guy I talked to there helped point me to their gate across the field to the machair and the beach, where I idled for some time on a sunny afternoon.
