If you're taking the kids somewhere, Ocean Beach might be fun for them. They can run around. There are lots of ice cream and sweets shops. There are no cars. It's not really picturesque. If you're not too crazy about that scene there are lots of other towns and hamlets on Fire Island that might suit your fancy.

Fire Island Lighthouse

Went on fee-free Black Friday to avoid paying parking fee. 3/4-mile walk from parking lot 5 to lighthouse, but on wooden boardwalk. Fresnel lens is in one building, lighthouse keeper's house is visitor center, exhibits on first and second floor, and gift shop (and entrance to tower, which is a fee plus a height requirement, everything else is free.) If you're asking for the passport stamp (which is at the "connecting desk" before the tower entrance, not at the gift shop), be specific. i got the lighthouse one (that is, for the lighthouse passport) and had to ask for the National Park one before getting the NPS stamp.

Kismet Beach

Reviewed By vzescape - Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania

Took the boat out on Fri sept 2 from Lindenhurst to spend the day on FI before tropical storm Hermine roughed things up. Got moored in the Great South Bay with the tide so low and made our way over to Farm Shoals. As the tide came in we anchored on the bayside of Kismet and had lunch on the boat waiting to check the direction of drift. There were about 10 other boats anchored and we wanted to avoid hitting their lines. Had a quick swim in the 3 ft calm water and then walked the 1/4 mile cement walkway, West Lighthouse Walk, to the beachside. Mostly rental homes lined up on both sides. It's pretty easygoing and family-friendly here, bikes, wagons, and walking same as the rest of the island. Not uncommon to get a nod smile or hello as you walk by; I find people to be pretty friendly and accepting in Kismet, unlike other communities in FI where the snobbish think they are better humans than the rest of us. Every few minutes you'll glimpse deer roaming the properties and they'll stay within a few feet from you while munching on grass. The sand dunes that were eroded by Sandy are being re-established (grass plantings look like hair replacements). The sand is light and soft compared to the rough orange sand on the bayside. I don't see lifeguards when I'm there so I'm not sure if Kismet has any. All LI beach goers should receive education on the riptides. Today they didn't feel strong but we took no chances and kept the kids in the zone with the waves which, likely due to the storm down south, were large and powerful; so much so that the kids tumbled each time and their suits and hair were full of sand and small stones. I enjoyed sitting with hands buried in the warm sand, watching the clouds drift, waves crash, and piper plovers run up and down with each ebb, poking for food in the sand. It's a marvelous beach that never seems to be crowded. About a 10 min walk West (little less than a mile) is the black & white banded lighthouse and beyond that is Robert Moses State Park field 5, where the cars come over the Causeway from Babylon. A few more miles West and you'll find yourself at the West end of FI, Democrat point. From there it's 31 miles to the East end of FI. Kismet, a hamlet of Islip, is only a few blocks wide and has probably less than 200 homes, refurbished tennis courts, basketball, and playground; a food market, pizzeria, 2 eateries (the Inn and the Out) plus Marina with about 50 slips and the ferry boat dock. To the east is the larger Saltaire community with more services and amenities all within a short walk from Kismet. A really unique experience for family fun in the sun. If I were to stay longer than a day trip I would rent in Ocean Beach since there is more to do there.

Robert Moses State Park

Reviewed By marie s - Huntington, New York

I truly mean that is the best beach in the world. I have traveled extensively and although Hawaii comes quite close, Robert Moses beach is still number 1 in my book. I say this because of our proximity to this magnificent shoreline, the miles of pristine beach available to you, the beautiful waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the forethought of Robert Moses to preserve this for all the people.
I especially like this beach in the Spring and Fall because the crowds are mostly thinned out and you can enjoy almost a private feeling to the beach. Even in summer if you walk away from the concession stands and bathrooms you can get the feeling of being more remote.
We get an Empire Passport access to the state parks but you can also pay a $10 a day fee to park here.

The Sunken Forest

Reviewed By Deadgrass - Huntington

A small hidden forest on Fire Island lets you experience something completely unforgettable. You take a ferry here from Sayville and that is where the adventure begins. Docking in Sailors Haven you can head to a visitors center which gives you plenty of information about the forest. Although the area is small for hiking (about 1.5 miles) it is an unforgettable experience. A winding boardwalk leads you from a bay, through a forest with bogs to the ocean. A great place for birdwatchers as there were plenty of different species.
