The 7 Best Things to Do in Mekong Delta, Vietnam

January 20, 2018 Velvet Champine

The Mekong Delta (Vietnamese: Đồng bằng Sông Cửu Long, "Nine Dragon river delta" or simply Vietnamese: Đồng Bằng Sông Mê Kông, "Mekong river delta"), also known as the Western Region (Vietnamese: Miền Tây) or the South-western region (Vietnamese: Tây Nam Bộ) is the region in southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries. The Mekong delta region encompasses a large portion of southwestern Vietnam of over 40,500 square kilometres (15,600 sq mi). The size of the area covered by water depends on the season. The region comprises 12 provinces: Long An, Đồng Tháp, Tiền Giang, An Giang, Bến Tre, Vĩnh Long, Trà Vinh, Hậu Giang, Kiên Giang, Sóc Trăng, Bạc Liêu, and Cà Mau, along with the province-level municipality of Cần Thơ.

Old Quarter

Hanoi’s lively Old Quarter comprises nearly 40 streets packed with shops selling all kinds of goods, each street named for its primary good or service.

Reviewed By PeterF_Syd - Sydney, Australia

My visit to Hanoi started by wandering the streets of the Old Quarter. Reportedly over 1000 years of human habitation, it’s what you might expect from a crowded Asian trading area. Shops, narrow streets, bustling motorbikes and authentic eateries. I spent 2-3 hours strolling, browsing and marvelling at the sites, sounds and smells, which was mostly pleasant, but occasionally pungent. Consider joining a foodie walking tour so you know where to eat. I was somewhat cautious of the street food vendors but plenty of tourists were indulging in many of the eateries. I kept my souvenir shopping for other places on my trip as there is a lot of choice here, but quality was lacking. Mostly imported goods, probably from China. Locals are friendly. Well worth a visit.

Da Dia Reef

Ganh Da Dia or calling Da Dia Reef is a seashore area of uniformly interlocking basalt rock columns located along the coast in An Ninh Dong Commune, Tuy An District, Phu Yen Province, Vietnam

Da Dia is located a bit in the middle of nowhere, but the drive is well worth it, leading through both villages and empty country side..
The stone formation looks just like in the pictures you've seen, but there is more to the park. A path leads around it and the views are stunning.

Shops outside sell local bamboo hats and souvenirs. You can haggle with shop keepers though the things are not very expensive!

Lake of the Restored Sword (Hoan Kiem Lake)

A rare breed of turtle enjoys this popular lake almost as much as countless locals and tourists. Hoan Kiem Lake is a dynamic daily tableau, from morning walks amid locals doing exercises on the shore, to young couples water-gazing on park benches, to the multiple shopping and sight-seeing opportunities in the vicinity. Centrally located in the city, Hoan Kiem Lake serves as a massive home base, and provides endless people-watching and recreational opportunities on the edge of the Old Quarter.

Hoan Kiem Lake is so centrally located in Hanoi. For any tourist, it’s hard not to touch on this super lake. There is so much activity all around it - Bar, restaurants, coffee shops, and lots of people! People are always lively somewhere around this lake - tourists, visitors, families, young people, and lots of entertainers. And at weekends most of the area is pedestrianised with fun and games. It’s near the Opera House, the Sofitel Mettopole Hotel, the Old Quarter.....just go there!! It’s great and atmospheric!!
